1st Morning Run

Tomorrow is W9R3 for me, and my first morning run (due to works christmas "do" in the afternoon - say no more) Any tips for a morning run, how soon after getting up? what about breakfast - before or after? It's my last run so don't want to make a rookie mistake. Any tips gratefully received.

Thanks

It will depend how long after getting up you plan to run. If immediately, many will head out having only drinking a glass of water. I struggle with low blood sugars so I always have something small to eat first (and my oh so important cup of coffee). But I'm usually not heading out until I've been up for over an hour. If you choose to eat, keep it small and light. I'll have a piece of toast, or instant oatmeal, or an egg or a banana with yogurt. You don't want something that is going to repeat on you while running.

Best of luck tomorrow. Enjoy your graduation run. Morning is always my favourite time to run, perhaps it will become yours too.

Morning runs are ace - you don't have as much time to get physically tired before hand, and personally I find I'm more alert after a run. Tips wise, well I would say just keep doing what you've been doing, and don't let the fact that the time is different phase you.

I don't know how early you are planning on going really early, but don't make the same mistake I've made a few times, and gone out in hat, gloves, scarf, thick coat, particularly if icy, and then been boiling after my warmup walk, and had to carry said excess clothing whilst running lol

All the best, hope your run is great :)

Decent cup of coffee does me. Porridge when I get back.

I have done all my runs first thing.

Alarm goes off at 5.30, I drag myself out of bed, force half a banana and a glasss of water down and head out.

I have the other half and another glass of water when I get back and carry on as normal,

Seems to work ok!

I'm generally up at 4:30am and straight out, shock tactics which have worked for me since day 1! Once I'm back I'll have water, tea and yoghurt/bran flakes/banana. I feel super energised for the day after that.

Everyone is different though so it's worth experimenting, I can't get on with running after work but I see far more people out and about whilst I'm driving home than I do when I'm out early in the morning.

Good luck with whatever you do, enjoy your running!

I get up drink water and go and run. If it is a later run then I will eat first. But if you eat then you need to allow extra time between eating and running.

It is genearlly considered that you don't need to eat before a morning run if it is only up-to an hour. However, I have run longer than this without eating and been fine, ravenous after I got home, but fine during.

Thanks for all your tips and advice. I'm aiming to be heading out at 6am tomorrow so I reckon a glass of water and a banana before hand should do. Should be a graduate by 6:40!!!

It's a glass of water and a banana for me. It's great running in the morning when the sun is just coming up. Good luck and enjoy.
