Brisk walk = niggly knee????

Is it possible that the warm up and cool down walks are hurting my knee more than the running?

I’m hypermobile and it’s more troublesome on my right side so my right knee can dislocate.

It’s this knee that’s annoying and slightly sore. But I can’t help but feel it’s more the dynamic waking (I usually walk super slow) rather than the running. The running itself doesn’t niggle but the walking does.

Or am I just fooling myself ha ha

Thanks for any advice. I’m on week 9 tomorrow so doing the long runs.

Brisk walking gives me major shin splints, so I don't doubt it can affect the joints. I'm also a plodder by nature. I've never had an issue fitness-wise doing walking intervals/warm-up/cool-down at my usual plunky pace so give it a go and see if it helps.

Ah good. I’m glad I’m not imagining it. Curbs are a pain in the ..... knee too

That’s weird - I was finding the exact same thing the other day, my knee was twinging but only on the walks! No idea why and can’t offer any advice but at least it’s not just you!!

I always do a brisk walk warm up and am always very grateful to start running.

I am not in pain, but running is so much easier.

When running , the biggest NO-NO is to try to run faster by OVERSTRIDING and landing on your heels forward of your centre of gravity (hips) . You can find out why this is and how to stop it by shortening your stride in any of a million articles on the Internet - BUT, this same principle applies when you are walking. Most people do indeed land on their heels when walking and that is OK for casual walking. HOWEVER - it is common practice to also attempt to increase their walking speed by "striding out" - for those having pain in hips and knees while walking, I am willing to bet this is what you are doing. So - when "brisk walking" try not to overstride - it is also possible to midfoot land when walking fast - try it, you'll like it!!!!

Thanks so much. Yes I’m sure this is what I’m doing. I tried really really hard when I was actually running last night to fall mid foot and my knee is less painful but didn’t consider this in the walk. I will definitely try this.

Great advice. Thank you
