Help- Bad Hair Day !

Sadly I am not a natural blonde .... and my bleached hair gets a real pounding from all the sweat that gets piled onto it. It often has to be washed twice in one day.

I am now left with a head of hay and I would ideally like to grow it a bit more.

So my question is- what do you all use to protect your hair from sweat, salty wind and other dirty things?

I know there isn't a miracle cure but some of you must have found something that helps???

Thankyou :)

A nice brolly should do the trick, Aunt Sally 😂

;)

mine gets bleached from the chlorine in the swimming pool. The ends (it's almost to my waist) are like straw. Neil's Yard do an incredible revitalising orange shampoo. It leaves those Worzel Gummidge ends like silk without conditioner, though they do a conditioner too. It's pricey, about £11 per bottle, but you don't need vast amounts and it's worth it. You could also try an oil treatment before washing, argan or olive or coconut oil, though i find that's the very devil to get out of my hair, so probably use sparingly and leave on overnight.

Great idea, I do love Neals yard stuff. Wow your hair sounds amazing... and good tip re the oil, thankyou :)

I realise you wanted preventive measures, but othr than a hat I cant suggest anything 😊

Hat. Honestly, simple as It’s either burning and turning to hay or it’s getting wind blasted and desiccated

you can get some hair treatments to restore it If you have it coloured in the salon, the colours are usually loaded with conditioners, and it feels really good afterwards

You don’t normally wear a hat do you. I would get one and wear it. I got hellishly burned last April after a windy trail run and then a race on a very hot day the day after. My hair was dried out but my face! OMG 😮. Even my eye lids It just shows what the weather can take out of you Weather beaten is what you’d call it 😫

So, I vote HAT 😃👍🏃‍♀️✔️

ju-ju- profile image
ju-ju-Graduate in reply tomisswobble

I have never worn a hat and now that you say all that perhaps I should get one? I guess the hair still gets sweaty under it tho?

Rockette profile image

Yes I ran in my hat today and my hair was soaked with sweat . Like someone had thrown a bucket of water over me 😂

I use this and it works fine for me. I also tie my hair up when I go running so it doesn't get whipped all over the place.

L'Oreal Paris Elvive Oil Shampoo for Very Dry Hair

Oh wow I havent seen that one before, I might have to nip to Boots in my lunch hour!

Fishypieface profile image

L'Oreal Elvive colour protect is the best colour shampoo I've ever used (£2.50 Wilkos on special) and I've tried loads - including organic, £20 a bottle jobs. Keeps hair soft and supple and colour even, I usually end up ginger (from brown) but not with this.

Another vote for Elvive. Their Extraordinary Nourishing conditioner is just the bees knees. I use it every day and my hair stays in great condition.

Although I do think a water softener makes all the difference to skin and hair. Makes cleaning a lot easier too 🙂

KKThomas profile image
KKThomasGraduate in reply toGeo-Lesley

The Elvive treatment oil is amazing too, put a few drops on your hair when it's wet, doesn't make your hair greasy and leaves it lovely and shiny. If your hair is really bad you could put some conditioner on it before you run then tie it back and rinse it out in your post run shower.

In the winter I’m a baseball cap wearer. It keeps me warm and protects my hair. I can’t wear it in the summer as I overheat. My hair is mid length so I always tie it up which I think helps, then I use treseme conditioner for dyed hair as well as their shampoo. ( I refuse to go as grey as I should be😀).

ju-ju- profile image
ju-ju-Graduate in reply toRealfoodieclub

If I didnt bleach i would be grey as grey!!!! The hat does seem to be a high scorer on this front!!

Looking good :) Personally, I have too little hair to worry about :( and I wear a headband with integrated blue tooth speakers so by the end I look just awesome!

I did read recently that in general we wash our hair far too often as well as our bodies which presents a challenge now I have started running. However I have decided to only rinse my hair in water for 2-3 days then use shampoo ~2 a week. Fortunately I have few friends so not an issue!!

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply tolittlewiz

I second this! I just rinse my hair with water and wash it properly when it gets into a desperate situation. I don't go out in public as much as you, though, ju-ju - although if I do have to I may use a squirt of dry shampoo to avoid looking too greasy :D. My hair is also bleached, and I think the ends are actually beyond redemption so I may have to face the chopper soon...

Having said that, the Neal's Yard shampoo sounds good, Hidden

Do you find all the salt goes with just rinsing?

It seems ok to me!

nb I always wear a hat of some sort, but I find that's what makes me really sweaty!

I'm seeing the error of my ways... :)

Thats very brave. Mine is soaking with sweat after a run or spinning I am not sure I could cope with that?!!

I use a Buff...its a scarf, headband, hat, bandana & you can bung it in the wash with all your other sweaty gear x

ju-ju- profile image
ju-ju-Graduate in reply to

Yes I have a buff and have been known to wear it on my head if its freezing. I hadn't thought of it as hair protection- good point!!

misswobble profile image

The hat will protect your hair from the weather Exposure to desiccating wind, freezing cold temperatures, hot sun, all, take their toll

Tresemme conditioner is good but cheap from Wilco etc You can get a hair treatment pack for deeper conditioning formwhen it’s damaged

You could treat yourself to a hair cut to remove the damage and get the conditioning thing done at the same time. Then you’ll be Christmas party/. run weather ready Double bubble 😃.

Aw shocks! Not natural! But we still love you JuJu, even Monroe wasn't a natural blonde!😊

My wife slinky has been wearing a cap while her big wound heals after her operation, she doesn't usually wear hats either but must say she looks rather fetching in it, of course you know to use a conditioner shampoo being a woman..😊

She's coming along really well especially after what she's had done, quite remarkable! but she is a tough runner! of course not back running yet but she's had a gentle walk around the park while I've been running round, she's also bought a nice bobble hat in black with silver bits in, thinking you may like as well, being a panther!😊

I am so pleased to hear that please send her some panthering love from me :)

Had to take slinky for an unscheduled hospital appointment this lunchtime, as she was concerned about some aspects going on with her head and was given all good news that everything is fine and got official confirmation that the tumour was definitely benign, she just had some natural worries which have now been put to bed and given her and me peace of mind, it's all part of the recovery process..😊

Other than products which may or may not he ..When you wash.. a good Baby shampoo and rinse your hair in rain water...:)

rain water ;)

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toju-ju-

Yep.....my Nan rinsed our hair in rain water until I was old enough to do it myself..I did it for years..and when we moved house to where we are now..yep..we had to buy a water butt :) it gives a great shine...but..better done cold:)

davelinks profile image
davelinksGraduate in reply toOldfloss

Acid rain entered my thoughts, I suppose that is more of a problem if in big cities.

Cold water makes the hair squeak as well when slinky rinses hers and looks shiny.. I can't do that now as haven't got enough now to make squeak!😥😁

That is what my Nan said.. shiny hair :)

In the summer I always put a UV spray on my hair as although it is dark, it lightens considerably in strong sunlight and while that's nice up to a point, if it goes beyond a certain point it looks horrid, especially when sea salt and chlorine get into the mix too. I've used several and found the Charles Worthington one to be ok. I have a similar problem as I wash my hair more than is probably good for it (it matters for me to be presentable at work and I feel totally out of sorts when my hair does not feel fresh).

If you want to avoid washing it so much, try to substitute your shampoo every now and then for a rinse with water and vinegar, which should wash away residues and freshen up your hair without stripping away oils. It really does work. My daughter does this a lot - we started using vinegar in a final rinse as they say this deters the dreaded nits (not sure whether this is true or not) and it makes her hair so shiny - everyone comments on it. She is 11 and starting to get greasy hair now, and we found that the more we washed it the quicker it became greasy again, so we started using a vinegar-water rinse instead just to freshen up between washes, and it has helped a lot. They say apple cider vinegar is the best but we've used normal white wine vinegar too, and it's still worked.

If you want to grow it, then counter-intuitively your best bet is frequent small trims to really keep on top of it in terms of condition. Explain your intentions to your hairdresser who should be able to help.

Great tips thankyou. I have to fess that I go regularly to a v posh hairdresser. I had it cut short over a year ago ( due to the hay issue) but I love having some locks. Like you I work full time and I hate having greasy hair. I never blow dry and I dont use anything other than Morroccan oil on it but its still hay-esque! I will try the vinegar rinse as that makes sense to combat the grease. Thankyou so much :)

HeleneCorsa profile image
HeleneCorsaGraduate in reply toju-ju-

You're welcome! You might need to persevere a bit if you are trying to extend time between one wash and another although the benefits of vinegar show very quickly. You'll need to dilute the vinegar 50-50 with water. I also keep some of the diluted vinegar in a spray bottle to apply to my daughter's hair after shampoo too. The smell disappears completely as soon as the hair is dry.

My hairdresser recommended not to use shampoo but to use a cleansing conditioner instead. I will post the name later, when I get home. There seems to be lots of them around though, probably cheaper than the one from the salon :-0

Try a hat I think. Mine isn’t too bad and I always wear one x

From Rich my hairdresser - he says - use a 'no sulphate' shampoo - they used to be mega expensive but I think most of the main brands have it now. That's what I use because in Italy my hair gets 'bleached' naturally just by being out and about during Spring to Autumn. Use a no sulphate conditioner too, but frankly Moroccan oil is good and should work happily. And he gave me my ultimate tip - although not at this time of year - slap on conditioner onto your hair in summer when you run, it acts as a barrier to the salt and moisture - it's not sexy, but it really helps me.

Paul Mitchell number three works a treat for me and I always wear a wide headband to keep my hair in place so it doesn't fly everywhere. You could also get a keratin treatment? Pricey but so, so worth it! Shiny perfect hair until it grows out!!

My hair isn't coloured any more, and I've pretty much given up using shampoo, and my hair is the best it's ever been. Maybe once a week I shampoo it, the rest of the time I just rinse with water - yes, even after a sweaty run. Occasionally I use conditioner, but mostly it's just water. I used to fight with my hair, frizz, tangles etc but not any more.

ju-ju- profile image
ju-ju-Graduate in reply toCurlygurly2

wow that is really amazing... no sweat troubles?

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply toju-ju-

No. I must admit I use a lot of product to tame it down a bit, I just make sure they are water soluble, maybe they all are these days.

It isn't remotely greasy though, I imagine I could go weeks with no shampoo before I saw any grease - it's pretty dry and tends to frizz without gel or cream. Maybe it's different with oilier hair.

Apple cider vinegar! Half water, half ACV. Either spritz it in the ends after you've washed and conditioned it, or do a rinse with it (again after you've washed and maybe conditioned it) or leave it in overnight. It's very cleansing and conditioning as well, so you may be able to substitute it entirely for shampoo and conditioner on some washes (save you doing it twice a day then!!)
