A silly question perhaps...

Hi all!

I’ve been doing the plan on a treadmill at my local gym. I’d really like to run outside after I graduate (but I’m a woose when it’s cold!!) and I wonder is running outside a better experience?

I'm sure it'd be a different experience. I can't imagine running on a treadmill and never thought of doing that when starting the programme. I've never felt very confident going into a gym and always expect that comedy thing to happen where you end up with the treadmill speeding up! I like the variety you get outside including the scenery and the weather (even running in the rain isn't bad - just different) and think I'd find running really boring without them. One thing I've really enjoyed about this running thing is that it makes me get outside.

There's a real difference in running on grass, rough tracks etc and running on tarmac or pavements. I like the rough stuff except when it's too wet but it does make for slower going. Tarmac by comparison is easier - though generally the views aren't as good - at least where I run.

I'd give if a go if I were you - you'll like it or not - there's nothing to lose.

Have to say though for me there nothing like a run at dawn on a lovely crisp autumn morning 😊

Thanks-I suppose with being a bit heavy and self conscious I felt less exposed at the gym; however I’ve toned up a bit (just about to start W7) so might just bite the bullet after I graduate and get out there 😊

I used to be a bit of a running ninja - wearing all black and clinging to the shadows 😂

I don't care now - and believe me I'm in no way a lean mean running machine - and there are all sorts out there. For every super fast fully kitted out athlete, there's someone plodding along like me 😊

It really is a personal thing, in general once people run outside rather than in the treadmilll they much prefer being in the great outdoors. Some folks can’t stand a treadmill at all. Personally I’m very fond of the ‘mill but would still rather be outside unless I’m doing intervals or speed training... try it and see, you won’t regret running in the fresh air.

Running is great, wherever you run. However, being outdoors exercising is amazing. Hard to put into words but so much better. You just need to try it and see.

Yesterday I ran out, the thermostat said minus 1, the grass was crispy under foot and the sky a deep blue. The squirrels were searching for food and providing a lot of fun for my dog. The hares were standing proud in the fields. We saw a family of deer in the woods. My nose was running, I was sweaty and fell over in a stream....

And the treadmill........

If you don't mind my asking, what stops you from trying one of the runs of the programme outside and see how it goes? I can understand you feel comfortable on the treadmill and want to make sure you complete the programme before going into "the wild", though.

I've never run on a treadmill and like Fitter40s, I like being outdoors, whether going for a walk or now for a run. I spend so much time sitting at a desk for work, or indoors anyway, that even if the weather's not too nice, apart from going to the swimming-pool, I will prefer to spend a bit of time outside to feel that I haven't spent the whole Inside a building.

So, if you enjoy being outside and have a nice place where you can run, with flat ground to feel confident about your running, go for it! And don't let that "being heavy" feeling deter you from getting out. The only drawback is what to wear to be warm enough but not too much. Today, with my silly (but comfy) pink Asics, I wore a red snood and a bright green fleece that makes me look like Shrek... I did get some funny looks lol but who cares?

Whatever you decide, have some nice runs on the treadmill or outside in any case!

Thanks Anthie-I suppose it’s a confidence thing tbh.

However I’ve been inspired to try running outside and will keep u all posted 😊

In the park where I run, there are so many people running, all sizes, all kinds of outfits, all kinds of paces and styles, all ages: fast professionals, regular runners, Sunday runners, slow runners etc...

I'd love to be one of those young runners who hardly sweat a drop and seem to run effortlessly, but I'll never be (well, actually, running the 30mns gradually seems to require less effort ;-)! However, I feel so great when I run or walk there that the rest doesn't really matter. Your confidence should rise with your completing your runs: feel comfortable in your body and then nothing can stop you. And feel proud for what you've already achieved because that's no small thing!

I've only run outside as I figured it was a cheaper way of exercising, it's not true as I've had to buy running gear for different weather conditions 😂 anyway I love it outdoors!

I really don't worry about what look like or who sees me as I'm out there doing something I thought I would never manage.

Give it a go and if it's not for you return to the treadmill but whatever you do keep up the good work 👏

Yes! Outdoors is lovely - all that fresh air and stuff. I'm a big lass too, felt a bit self conscious when I started, but you know what, no-one gives a dam, get out and enjoy! Xx

Hiya I do both and equally enjoy both . It’s nice to run outside when it’s chilly and Ull soon warm up . Nicer views not just a wall to look at and a real sense of completion once u finish the run x

Personally I love running outside and have huge admiration for those who run on treadmills which I would find really boring. You might want to read this recent post.
