Get yer skates on!

Just a bit slippy out this morning, nearly went a*rse over apex before even I got off the front step…. Deliberated for about 2 seconds and carried on… now I see why runners get injured, stupid bloodymindedness....thought I’d just chance it and see how icy it was rather than take the agony of not be able to run. Pretty stupid…. and I would have been better off on skates.

But, I was being careful, deliberately s l o w e d right down, checking the pavement for icy patches. My thighs were freezing, like a couple of whales clashing against each other in icy seas ... and it was skiddy, but I just about managed to stay upright, when the whales behaved themselves.

I’ve had to unplug Sarah and plug in Map My Bl**dy Run instead, which has been painful. Sarah’s my buddy now, we’ve been running for months on repeat, but I’m getting ready for Juju’s 10k plan, so I thought I should get in the real world. In spite of being snail-like my 1km time pinged up, same as normal. Slowed down even more for the next km, legs so heavy it felt the whales were swimming through wet cement….timing for the next km = a bit faster. So I’ve decided timing is all a load of old crap. What feels grimly slow actually isn’t. It was just hard, probably because it was so damn cold!

In the rec, Miserable Fag Lady sat on the bench, frozen to the spot like a statue, shrouded in a cloud of smoke …..although she actually croaked ‘hello’, even though her top lip flinched in disgust. I’ve finally ground her down over the weeks of chipper 'hellos' to no response... I’ll get her smiling one day…. probably as she stubs her fag out on my arm…

Excitable Whippet Man was next (he’s excitable, not the whippet) he’s been greeting me (on every lap - and I do about 5) with a big cheery hello and unfortunately a bit of a pervy leer... he seems to be hanging about (even when his dog’s got his coat on, sitting with his paws folded, tapping his watch)…. to the point where I speed up going past, as I’m sure if I slowed down, he’d jump on for a piggy back (sorry, but these are only available to Headintheclouds, in emergencies). He means well I am sure, just a bit tooooo friendly… I’m never satisfied, too miserable, too happy. I'd settle for just normal.

Anyway I was aiming for at least 7km but it was sooooooo cold, the whales needed a hot bath so I stopped after 5. Starting the 10km plan is going to be harder than I thought in this weather! I need some thermal leggings to go with my fluffy bed socks (which are super toasty fantastic by the way!) :)

Oh Fishypieface you were so lucky you didn’t end up as mashedfishypieface, with all that ice to contend with. I use Map My Run and what is it about mechanical voice lady - i imagine she is your miserable fag lady on tape!

Fleece lined leggings are utter bliss, makes my whales look fatter, but oh the bliss, so fleecy leggings with bed socks perfect... what about a quilted bed jacket to go over? Or a wee willie Winkie bed cap....

Maybe that's her day job! Yes, I realised about 10 mins in that it was silly of me to have gone out so early, I'll rack that up as a newbie to winter running mistake and I'm very grateful I didn't get mashed :)

My whales couldn't look any fatter... oh dear.... but needs must I suppose, it was soooooo cold. Quilted bed jacket, now there's an idea!! Or perhaps I'll just take along my duvet, hmmmm toasty!

No I realised in the middle of it that I shouldn't have done it, very lucky that I didn't strain or break something! Rookie error!

As ever a brilliantly descriptive post..:). I would love to do one of my cartoon drawings of MF Lady :)

Make sure you do take care running on ice... it is the one weather condition, I and a few of us won't run in! I had a nasty Bambi incident!! But, you were sensible and took it steadily!

You ran and did well and it sounds to have been a very cold run indeed! I have some Rab thermal leggings.. they are brilliant.. ( sale prices obviously ) !!

I would love to see that! :) Yes I won't be doing it again!! Also, lots of people leave their cars on in the ice to warm up and so it wasn't the usual clear aired run I have. Couple that with icy pavements and it wasn't worth it :( .

Well done on getting out. 👏👏 I will not be attempting any of my usual routes when it is slippy but I have just bought Decathlon thermal tights at £9.99. Not tried them outside yet but they fit well and seem as if they will be lovely and cosy.

Now I just need to recover from ribs and groin injury and find a gravelled track a short drive away to try them out. I am in a village that rarely sees a gritter - pretty but often very slippy.

Thanks for the heads up, will have a look at Decathlon. Poor you, I hope you get better soon, sounds nasty.

Yes, I realise now I was a bit of a twit and I'm lucky I didn't come a cropper! I'm racking my brains for non slip routes nearby, I don't want to have to stop my every other day routine, but I guess I can't control the weather.... damn it!!

thank you for my morning laugh. that was so funny and descriptive :) x

I find it difficult just walking when it's slippy - always been the same.

Me too, I don't know why I went out, I suppose I didn't think it would be that bad, the weather's been so mild of late. I now know better, lesson learned!

It's funny the people you meet, even when doing something as simple at jogging. I love nothing better than to people watch and as I keep the same time and the same route, it tends to just happen. It keeps me going and boredom at bay :)

Oh Fishy, you crack me up 😂

I suppose my first question has to be... can you skate..?? 😄

I’m going to have a bash at Juju’s 10k plan, but I’m keeping Sarah with me for as long as I possibly can - I’m not grown up enough to let go of her hand and face the real world just yet 🙈

I’m also going with the ‘timing is crap’ philosophy. I’m an algae encrusted sloth and I’m happy to stay that way 🤗

Huge congratulations for finding a glint of soul in the smoke engulfed Miserable Fag Lady... keep chipping away, you’ll crack her one day 😉

Excitable Whippet Man is even giving me the creeps - but his whippet clearly has the measure of him 😂 Thank you for giving me the exclusive rights for piggy backs... however, I’m be concerned that Excitable Whippet Man is hankering after a piggy front...!!! 😱 Maybe you should flash him your fluffy bed socks 😜

Well done on battling the sub zero temperatures AND on staying in an upright position. It was a brilliant run and YOU ROCK..!!

I’m with all the way with the 10k... coughing, spluttering, dribbling, snotting, slipping, sliding or bloody well crawling... I’ll be there... with cake and booze 🤗

Yay! So glad you'll be there too.... I do all of those things as well, and that's just on a normal day, boom boom! At least doing 10k has its plus side - more cake and booze! It's only taken me 6 MONTHS of doing this to lose half a stone!!! Not hindered in any way by cake and booze of course :)

Oh no, I shall be sprinting (aka stumbling a bit faster) past him now!! My fluffy bed socks are neon orange, that's enough to put anyone off :) I certainly won't be flashing anything else at him, that's for sure! NO piggy fronts!! I might wear 2 pairs of leggings from now on....

I'll have you know I can skate!... if I've got one of those penguin things in front of me and someone holding my hand...

Hahaha.. brilliant..!!

Well done on losing half a stone... I've been doing this for 3 months now and I've PUT ON 5lb 🤦🏻‍♀️😆

Neon orange bed socks...!!!???!!! You're probably attracting him, like a moth to a lightbulb 💡😂 I think I'd put a belt round those leggings too ... and carry a fork... a pitch fork..!!

Kidding, just kidding... he is most likely a harmless (probably lonely) chap who is full of admiration for the fact that you are out there at that time of the morning, in all weathers, making a difference to your health and wellbeing 🤗

Wow, I can skate that well too..!! Is there anything we can't do..??!!?? WE ROCK..!! 🤣🤣🤣

Hahahaaaaa! Moth to a lightbulb! 😂😂I know they are disgusting socks (Primarni specials) but oh so snuggly, I nicked them off my daughter. Defo pitchfork 😂😂😂😂 belt, double layer leggings and big girl pants on the inside and out. He’ll be running for the hills with a prong up his jacksey!!

We do bloody rock!! Dressed like that no one’s gonna argue! 😂😂🤣

Aw thanks! My posts are, thank goodness, usually heavily subsidised by headintheclouds, who makes everything worth reading! Am sure you've seen her posts, they are stomach-aching hilarious. It's great to know we are all in the same boat, plugging away at our own wellbeing in our own quirky, hazardous, human way! :)

haha - I'd noticed you two were a right pair! We're definitely all in the same boat in many ways but some of you have an incredible way of documenting the journey!
