I run through a park. Much of which has no light. What is better to run with a headlamp or a chest one?

This was asked over on the marathon forum too. Short answer is whichever you prefer. I've just switched from head to chest. Things to look out for

Make sure you have back up just in case - phone?

Head torches are better (in my opinion) if there's a strap going over the head as well as around. It keeps in place better and doesn't need to be too tight.

Chest torches can be a bit snug once all your gear is on if you're on the large side. But they do have a rear light that sits on your back. When I ran with a head torch I had a red light attached to a belt.

I prefer a headtorch because it puts the light where I am looking.

Do you use the single band one?

You are better off with a central band over the top of your head, to prevent slipping.

My first one also projected too far from my head and tended to wobble a bit.

Recruit a torch carrier? 😜

have A look at the head torch website as there are so many different uses and lumen strengths to suit.

Silva is a popular make as is Petzyl, Alpkit and Lenser. Mine was only £17 so is basic but it stays put perfectly well, has a white fixed lamp at the front or it can flash, and a red lamp at the back which flashes. So not bad. Not bright enough for total darkness though, as in woodland Get what you need or you’re paying over the odds. I think the chest ones are for a wider light array to illuminate a wider splay

Not what you're looking for?
