Running after an accident!

I am a 47 year old woman and have never run a day in my life. This app has been brilliant so far and I got to the start of week 4 when I had an accident (not running) a stupid trip in the house where I land really hard on the corner of a table into my Breast / chest area leaving me badly bruised and extremely sore! Because of this I haven’t run in almost 3 weeks!!! Am not 100% better yet but want to get back into it before I lose all motivation! Should I just start the whole programme again and just ease into it? Not sure what to do??

Hi.. welcome and ouch!

If you have not done any exercise in the three weeks... then maybe, if you feel you need to, think about going back a tad, and using it as a return build up. If you feel the Week 1 is the place to start, that is fine. Only you know how you feel.. or, you could try Week 3 and just test the water?

I had a similar accident, except, I fell over the coffee table and broke my ribs :)

As soon as the initial pain eased... I used my elliptical cross to keep my legs moving...( no impact!)

So..... I kept moving ( I am a lot older than you and would stiffen up really quickly)...As soon as I was able I did get outside again !

If you are running outside , then my advice, as to everyone, would be, steady and slow, choose an easy route, with a flat, even surface and see how everything feels...some exercise on rest days too, to continue your recovery...simple gentle stretching and breathing exercises too.. take slow, deep breaths , letting your lungs inflate fully each time.

The main thing is, you will do this and you will get back to it...just take it gently:) Keep posting progress too please?

Thanks for that - I was thinking of maybe just going back to week 1 - can’t hurt can it? I will let you know how it goes - hope you’re fully recovered now? X

It will be fine.. take it steady.:)

Yes.. fully recovered now, thank you... it was last October.. the same week my small granddaughter...(known on here as small runner in training) was born! I had no time to feel sorry for myself!

She was one on Sunday last... and keeps me very fit.. two days caring for her each week and an average of ten miles walked with her, in her buggy, on those days :)

So I did week 1 run 1 again- it was definitely the one to do - the cold air played havoc with my chest! And feel really stiff tonight - never mind - onwards and upwards x

Very well done.... make sure you keep warm.. a Buff helps with the cold air, too! Stretch well and make sure you rest... it will come :)

A buff?? New to this - excuse my ignorance!!

Is a buff one of those tubes of fabric you can wear round your neck as a scarf, pull up as a hat..etc? Those stupid accidents are annoying aren't they - I managed to fall over backwards in the garden and bash my back on a pile of logs. Agony for about 10 days. I ran for a shorter distance rather gingerly But found I hadn't lost much fitness in 2 weeks.
