I’m 49 and desperate to get fit and slimmer before my 50th in May next year.
Always hated running but am a fond Walker and like cycling but these runs are hell. I’m very determined to keep it up as one of my best friends is a runner and he says it gets addictive so I’m hoping that will happen to me.
I also find it quite lonely!

Hi Feebe I can honestly say it does get easier. Keep at it and take it nice and slowly is the best advice I have had on here. I'm on week 3 and and the first few times out were the hardest but it's amazing how quickly your stamina improves. I often run with my husband but if you have no running partner then try some music or podcasts to listen to while you are out. Keep at it, you won't regret it. Good luck
I've just finished week 2 and already I can feel changes that are happening and now rather than dreading a run I can't wait for the next one (but rest is very important).
Music playlists work for me - have the C25K app and an up-tempo playlist on my iPhone when I'm out.
One tip (not from this) is a pair of bluetooth headphones. Don't need to be expensive (mine were £17) and less hassle than having wires all over the place.
Hi!! It will get easier I’m sure, just take it very slowly as others say! I made a couple of playlists with songs I like ! Might have to invest in wireless earphones as I get a bit tangled!!
I’ve noticed a change in my body shape in the 5 weeks I’ve been doing it!
OK- so as a 47 year old who has been running now for 4 years I can hand on heart say that YES it gets better... it doesnt get easier but my goodness I crave the daily endorphine kick it brings. I go through the day 10 times better if i have run in the morning, even after a bad nights' sleep.... keep up the good work
I love your optimism ju-ju, thank you. Indeed, I’m sure too that I will graduate 👨🎓. Hey, well done you, hopefully I’ll get the same buzz to keep it up. 🤞
The post-run glow is very addictive. Literally, apparently, but as addictions go it's not one to worry about.
I certainly don't always love running itself though. Most runs for me are still a total mixture of "I hate this and I wish it was finished" and "This is just great".
Yesterday I ran a new route (Lady Mary's walk, Crieff) and it was SO beautiful. I recommend putting plenty of variety into your routes and choosing pretty ones when you can.
And as has been said, good music or podcasts can be a bonus. Sometimes I find myself laughing at the lyrics of a song - like "I'm trav'ling at the speed of light, I wanna make a supersonic woman of you" when I could probably walk faster than I'm running!
Ah, thank you so much! I’m going to keep going and will keep you posted. I’ve been doing the same route so far so maybe I’ll vary a bit so as not to get bored 👍🏼
