Any advice on how long I should rest up or if I should attempt a gentle lead back??
Its not agony and I can put my weight on it just feels tender around the ankle bone and I can feel it as dull ache

Does it respond well to ice? Is it sore only on activity? Do you have tight muscles in your leg? Are you stretching well?
I’d be interested in what folks say as I too have a “niggle” on my heel and I’m on same week as you. I’ve iced, stretched and massaged but it’s just the same.
It’s not muscular, feels more like a bruise under my skin. Running doesn’t seem to make it worse but is it stopping it getting better I wonder?
I am suffering from a lightly sprained ankle at the moment and haven't run for nearly a fortnight, but hoping to get out before the weekend.
Your ankle takes a lot of strain when running and it really is not a good idea to run until it feels completely better. I have been cycling, which keeps the joint mobile and limits the movement to the safe forward and back plane and helps to get the blood flowing without any load bearing. Gentle rotation of your foot, once pain has subsided, helps to regain full mobility.
Mine is a sprain caused by my foot rolling outwards on rough ground. Apparently, a medial sprain, caused by the foot rolling inwards can take longer to recover.
My first run out will be (yet another!!!) very gentle run, probably no more than a couple of ks, but will be terminated immediately if there is any pain. Taking the build up slowly is frustrating but far preferable to doing too much too soon.
