Parkruns are not a race! Mmm....

Hey gang! Parkrun 2 completed yesterday and a new pb of 32:36, getting closer to the magic 30 minute mark but still plenty of hard work to do. My morning runs are focused on 5K with no time aims, though it appears to be averaging at 34 minutes and a reasonable amount left in the tank, this week I'll increase the distance slightly and see where that leaves my legs & lungs. I wouldn't mind swapping them with the chap who lapped me yesterday and finished in 17 minutes! It's not a race they tell you, well I'm going to trip the 10 year old next week...... πŸ˜‰

Seriously, you need to be careful. You've not been running long and it's slow runs that build legs. Fast sprints when you're not ready could spell trouble. Wags finger ☝️

Thanks for that, understood though my runs are always at a comfortable pace for me. The park run is flat hence the faster time, my home route has plenty of hills so I'm not tempted to go too fast πŸ‘

It can get competitive if you let it, my nephew has struckup a bit of a friendship with a couple of guys at PR, they run it in about 24-25 mins but one of the guys gets anoyed if my nephew overtakes him, and few weeks back he shoved my nephew in the back, so he now tries to avoid him, silly really isn't it!...

Yeah a bit daft but that's the nature of the beast I guess!

You made me laugh lardofale . I don't do Parkruns often for that same reason. Some of the faster runners are so competitive and forget their manners. I'm hearing impaired so don't hear people coming up behind me to overtake, but hate it when they push past me, especially as I also have problems with my balance and can end up on the ground quite easily.

Don't worry about speed at the moment, you just concentrate on consolidating your 5k and enjoying it. :-)

I certainly get your comment re balance as I had big problems with my right ear with reduced hearing and off kilter balance. After years of tests I ended up having an operation to get rid of a cholesteatoma growth in my middle ear about 4 years ago.

I do have a competitive streak but I'll leave that on the cricket field and leave the competitive running to the, er, 'grown up(?)' experienced runners! πŸ˜€πŸ‘

Mine is caused by viral damage to my right inner ear about 2 years ago. I had chronic labrynthritis and BBPV as well as sudden profound hearing loss, tinnitus and hyperacusis. To begin with I couldn't walk, or even move without being sick, but I've gradually got it more under control, but do get challenged from time to time, and falls are irregular occurrence for me.

My consultant has offered to drill out my inner ear, which would initially upset my balance and would take about three months physio to get me normal but he says I would then be completely stable permanently. I just can't face having him drill through my skull to get in, and also the possible side effects of worsened tinnitus and possible facial paralysis.

I think I'll just stick with falling over and avoid those competitive runners at Parkrun. ;-)

That's an unfortunate catch 22 situation, my op was unpleasant but not as dramatic as the one recommended for you. I reckon you're right to avoid the pushy 'mobot' wannabes!

Ha. My OH ran a PB last week. Nearing the end he overtook a much younger chap and yelled out a cheeky 'let's go brother!'. The fellow then turned on the gas and left my OH in the dust. They had a good laugh at the finish line.

If I had any energy left I'd probably have a good laugh with my fellow Saturday morning sweaty people too! πŸ˜πŸ‘
