Hi all, 59 years old and recently quit smoking after a lifetime, the weights started coming on so need to do something about it.

With this in mind I've entered a 5k run (sponsored) and have today done my first training session.

Not even going to pretend it was easy, my heart was pumping a bit and I just about managed to keep my lungs in my rib cage but onwards and upwards and next one Monday.

I WILL DO THIS

Well done. It's a shock to the system at the start. But you'll make it. Enjoy the journey. It's very rewarding.

You can and you will! To quote those much more experienced than me (and I know the advice works), just go really really slow!

Well done on starting and it's good to have a goal to aim for.

I mis-read this and thought it said 'it's good to have a goat to aim for!' - my new glasses arrive next week and not a moment too soon!!!

you've already made a big life change by quitting smoking, A massive well done for that on it's own and to pretty much quote what you've already said "you can do this".

Hi there - been there myself - running is an amazing substitute for smoking and really is a great way to reclaim your lungs! Congrats on giving up - well done. Three years after giving up I'm now training for a ten mile race!!! Never would have believed I could do it 😎
