Knee advice

Can anybody offer any advice or similar experience please. I have just completed run 2 of week 6 and whilst I'm running I feel achey but nothing unusual. Once the run is over my knees are sore if I bend and for the rest of the day. Is this something I should be worried about? Do I need to look into getting new trainers? Or will my knees just get stronger over time?

Everything gets stronger over time as you build up your running legs and overall fitness

Proceeding slowly is the thing. No need to hurry. Slow is lovely for this job as all you have to do is to finish the session

You need proper running shoes I would say. They needn't be expensive ones at this stage.

I had a knee problem while doing the programme but I lost it along the way and it never returned.

misswobble's running shoe advice is really good. I had a stiff drink and spent my hard-earned cash on a pair of pukka running shoes. Best decision ever!

Another thing that helped me was the purchase of small knee bands that fit just below the knee cap (£8 from Amazon). They hold ligaments in place apparently. They were really helpful.

Just make sure you do your rest days or maybe have two rest days as there's some 'interesting' runs coming up from W6 onwards.

Hope this helps. Good luck :)

Achey is OK, pain is bad. This sounds like you just need time to build up muscles. The soreness on bending could suggest fluid/swelling but if it has only just started, then I would blame the heat. Try elevating your legs after a run. I am not sure about the bands that go under you knee caps. I have seen them and they make me worry about DVTs (deep vein thrombosis), although sure someone must have considered this. Quads exercises I think are preferable to them though.

Thanks for all your great advice. What sort of a price is reasonable for running trainers. Don't want to spend a fortune yet if it's not necessary x

How long is a piece of string? If you shop around and are happy with last seasons colour scheme rather than the very latest, you can get proper running shoes for £30. If you pay full retail for the newest etc reckon on £80-130
