Starting out again - Foot, ankle and shin pain!

Hiya,

I started the couch to 5k 2 years ago and got to about week 4 and then moved city and my life was changing so the running fell to the wayside. I was also experiencing bad shin splints and read that running when heavy (14-15st) can be really bad for your knees and legs.

I've recently started again as I missed it! I've been running in ASICS shoes I bought after doing their treadmill analysis thing and buying custom insoles (all 2 years ago)

I get this searing pain in my ankles, the bottom of my shins and my heels between runs, the runs themselves are tough cos I'm starting again but its the walking in between that is so painful I had to actually remove my shoes and finish my cool down walk in my socks!

It's like the connections between my calf and my foot are all working wrong and my gait feels clumsy and laboured when I'm walking - particularly between runs.

Almost as if my legs arent long enough and I would be more comfortable walking from toe to heel instead of heel to toe.

It's extremely frustrating because I've really enjoyed running outdoors again and I'm still only on week one but feeling I'll have to stop because the pain is so terrible!

Anyone have experience of this? I'm wary to go back into a shoe sale shop as I didn't feel the original staff member I spoke to knew what he was talking about.

Should I head to my doctor? a podiatrist? Go to a gym and try to speak to a trainer?

Any advice would be amazing

xxxx

Maybe a sports physiotherapist can advise as there sounds to be a lot going on? Good luck

Hiya, I had lots of problems..shin splints..painful knees etc etc. I went to a podiatrist and she sorted me out thank goodness and I haven't looked back. Hope you get it sorted and good luck.😀

Walking, stretching afterwards and frequent use of the foam roller could be one approach to your issues. Sounds like your calves are very tight, and this is straining your achilles. I would not recommend running until you've seen a podiatrist or sports physio.
