So I'm running for many reasons but a major one is weight loss. I'm so very hungry by the evening of a run day. I know I'm burning little in calories but wht is my body shouting 'lard!' 😱

Lard is fine. You can have lard. Lard is great for weight loss. Just don't have carbs.

When I say lard, I'm meaning crappy food choices! I'm going to break out an avocado now!

You won't need extra food while doing the programme ☺

Rig why not eat carbs? Would giving them up be for health reasons or something else?

I agree we eat too many of them, as a nation, especially the refined ones. I love my carbs though and a life without bananas and spuds is not worth living ☺ not to mention leafy greens and fruit. Sowed sweetcorn yesterday too. Yummy!

I exaggerate slightly for effect: some carbs are fine and necessary. Although the leafy green and other veg types. Refined carbs are obviously a no, but I avoid strachy carbs on the wholem and keep fruit to a minimum - loading up on fruit is still a load of sugars. The occasional sweet potato or handful of blueberries doesn't harm. I am not as fascist as I used to be wth it all. You have to live. I have a piece of wholemeal toast with my avocado and poached for breakfast on cheat day. (!!!)

It depends on what your requirements and goals are really.

Eat lots of fruits once you are back. Eat small portions. Drink lots and lots of water.

Its okay to feel hungry. If your body is crying out for food means you are doing a great job :)

Thanks for this, I lile the fact 'I'm doing a great job'! 😊

I would try to break the habit that you "have to have" a jacket potato on a run day. The association with potatoes should be with the couch, not running.

Have a look at Dr Michael Mosleys low carb programme. Lots of really great recipes that fill you up and regulate blood sugars. Based on good science too

Ha ha πŸ˜ƒ

I have porridge for breakfast on run days, dog walks day and race day. That's my fuel of choice

Lou You will find out what suits you best to fuel your runs after some trial and error.

FNL Avocado! I used to hate peanuts and avocado. I now love both of them. So versatile Choc mousse made with avocado is lush. Avocado is super calorific though so you have to plan for it πŸ™‚

I plan my best meal of the day for after a run. E.g. if I run in the morning I have a good breakfast - eggs or porridge with ground almonds and mashed banana. If I run in the evening I put a jacket potato or whole sweet potato to cook in the oven, sometimes spend my run planning what I'll eat when I get back. Food tastes great after a run :)

I have lost a fair bit of weight since I started running (though the weight loss is through looking at what you eat, not just the running!). When I first started, I did find that the thought of running made me want to eat more, but then I started timing my runs so I ran when I felt hungry with the promise that I could eat once I had completed my run. A lot of my 'hungry' feelings were more habit than real hunger, so going for the run first, broke the cycle of eating to set times. Then invariably once I got in, I felt so virtuous from having done the run, that I didn't want to ruin it eating junk, so my food choices improved, too!

If you're anything like I was, you have enough stored energy on board to fuel your runs, so maybe try running on empty and see how you go! (The endorphin kick from both having completed a run AND having avoided pigging out was amazing and now when I start to feel that 'bored/habit' hunger my first instinct is to go for a run rather than raid the fridge!)

That would be amazing! Thanks😊

Do you have a healthy breakfast and lunch. One that is full of good food. (Good food is what your diet preference is to you). I think we all know that certain processed foods sweets, biscuits sausage rolls and the like are occasional foods. I know round Christmas when my diet is at its worst I eat more after runs because the foods I am eating doesn't pack the same punch that i normally eat. I would experiment with different lunches and breakfasts and see if that makes a difference. My personal preference is a higher fibre diet to keep me feeling full for longer and I always feel like I have a reserve before going out for a run without changing my calories at all.

Yes breakfast and lunch are usually good then I get hungry at night😳

You might be craving carbs in the eve because you're tired and body thinks it needs fuel?

Try to go to bed earlier and wind down for an hour with bath, book, music. Good luck

Since starting the C25K program, I find that if I don't have some kind of carb for lunch on my evening run day I struggle! I learnt from quite early on that my body just doesn't cope well with the exercise without the carbs. I had a salad for lunch a couple of times during the first few weeks and my goodness did I struggle! So now, if I know i'm running later in the day I make sure I have some kind of carbohydrate for lunch and it works for me.

Everyone is different though.

I live on leafy greens as I grow them. I grow one which is really high in calcium, which I stumbled on by accident as I grew it for the chooks

Fatnorthernlass profile image
Fatnorthernlass in reply to misswobble

What's the high calcium green? It's helpful in low carb i'm reading!😊

Leafy green veg, oranges, apples are carbs There are lots of em. Carbs are not just bread and taters πŸ˜ƒ

Any dark green veg is good news if you eat plenty of veg and salads, along with reasonable amounts of protein, you will be fine.

The one I grow is cima di rapa, it's a quick growing loose flowering broccoli type veg. i don't think you can buy it, but broccoli will do just fine. Kale is great too. I stir fry it, dry it for crisps - which makes it really nice, unbelievably, or I just add some of the fresh kale tops to a soup or stew, near the end of cooking.

Found some seeds online for the unusual brocolli you mentioned! Going to give it a try in my weed patch/wildlife friendly/excuse for a garden!πŸ‘

I'm sure you know this, but it's quite common (apparently) to mistake the signal for thirst as hunger - so maybe a big glass of water and wait 15 minutes would help? Like you I have a love of carbs and fats but not so much a sweet tooth. (That said I've just remembered there's a custard slice in the fridge... I need it today as locked in waiting for an emergency plumber).

Fatnorthernlass profile image
Fatnorthernlass in reply to runlikeagirl

Thanks I often mistake everything for hungerπŸ˜‚. Good point! I do think that an emergency plumber is also a good excuse for a custard slice...or perhaps a glass of water!

I lost weight, then regained it. HOWEVER - I still eat crap (Parents - teach your kids what a kitchen is for and how to operate one - God, I miss Jeeves! LOL ;) ) and while I weigh much the same again now as when I started C25K, I look a heck of a lot slimmer and healthier :)

I think running comes first - as I am running longer distances I am getting more interested in starting to eat properly so I can run even further, and I am certainly drinking more water - and sodas over two weeks ago. :)

Change one thing in your life and there is certainly a knock on effect in other areas ;)

Lots of good food advise but no one has mentioned eggs. They really are the best fuel and so versatile. Hard boil a few and have them as an afternoon snack, all the energy you need for a run :D

Love eggs! Having spinach omelette for breakfast and don't feel hungry till lunch!

I've been eating Joe Wicks low carb meals this week after runs, yesterday I did a spin class and had one of his 'high carb recipes' but this only involved a sweet potato so not the worse. Tonight is cod, chroizo, kale and lentils.

Id advise you to his books, I find it difficult to think of 'low carb' meals and this is where his books comes in for me, letting me have 2/3 low/no carb dinners a week :)

I tend to have either porridge/egg and salmon for breakfast and this keeps me going. Then ill have a pitta with tuna salad, and fruit for lunch. I always have a banana before exercise!

Im on W7R2 and haven't lost any weight as of yet, but didn't think I would until i was doing 'proper' runs (i.e 20mins onwards). I also don't think you should go on scales and should play attention to how you look and feel i.e dress sizes!

Least with running your getting more fitter and healthier which is the most important thing i think!

Fatnorthernlass profile image
Fatnorthernlass in reply to amygill1990

It's true the scales can be deceptive! From past experience it takes a loss of a stone before I notice the difference and 2 stones before anyone else does! The fitness levels change really quickly as I can get up the stairs at work without gasping for breath now at the emd of wk2 x
