Interval hunger?

Anyone else find intervals make them especially hungry? It seems to work that way with me, even with the relatively short "Speed" podcast. It's 16 minutes, I can usually cover something over 2 KM, then I will be absolutely starving all day, as opposed to longer runs which seem to kill my appetite. Weird huh?

Yes, it might be due to the fact that you're using a different energy system: runnersconnect.net/running-...

Might cause you to get hungrier for different types of food too...?

That is a really good article, thanks for the share.

Yes, I was looking for sweet stuff yesterday, I rarely want anything like that. Thanks for the link, this is interesting. When I was a swimmer I ate chocolate every day, Curly Wurlys, I couldn't look one in the face now, far too sweet.

It is interesting, because it might be running the same distance but in different ways will affect your hunger levels differently. For instance, running it as interval sprints vs running it as a slow run and not getting above the lactate threshold - could make a significant difference.

In order to prevent the munchies after a run, I always down a glass of milk. It prevents the hunger from becoming uncontrollable. I'll also run just before a meal, that way I don't eat anything I hadn't planned to anyway. Doesn't always work mind you, well it does as long as someone doesn't wave chocolate at me.

Interval hunger usually comes about 6 hours afterwards, usually after my lunch! I really don't like sweet things any more, but my silly body doesn't know that!

Intriguing, that I don't know about, but will have to do some internet research. It could be psychological, maybe your body has got into a routine of expecting it. Like those who must eat their lunch at a set time of day or they get very hungry, but on days they're distracted the time goes by without the hunger rearing it's head. A big old guess that, though. Best of luck combatting the sweet things, never easy.

Ah, combatting them is easy, I never have them in the house! Yesterday I had cashew nut butter on oat cakes, not sweet, but did the trick! No, I don't think it's psychological, it's just what happens after intervals.

Your sweet enough floss!😁

I like a nice bit of cheese as well, have to be careful how much though, all in moderation! Had a good selection of cheeses at Xmas..😊

You are a total sweetie!

Yes, we had some lovely Christmas cheese...but like you, I have to moderate the intake.. although someone posted on here, an article on the benefits of cheese consumption :)

Lots of protein, would be careful eating too much full fat hard cheese though..😊

Hmm... Must see how that works, when I next do Speed... :) If this lurgy moves on!

What I have noticed is that I am really hungry , really , really after some runs, then on other mornings, not very hungry at all; need to see what distances and times those are and if there is a pattern..Food for thought there Curlygurly2 :)

Thanks:)

Me too, I'm really fed up with it! Second lurgy this winter, this one not so bad as the one I had in November, but they really put your training back don't they? Two last winter, two or three the one before...not fair :-(

Thank goodness.. I was thinking I was a real wimp being so fed up..I was just getting back on form after the broken ribs and then lurgified! Not good :(

If you're a wimp, then so am I...and I don't think I am. So, you're not either - so there!

My appetite goes completely after longer runs, it always has. I allow myself a little more on running days to compensate for the run. I have learnt to do this because if I don't up the food a little I eat stupid stuff and that's not the best. I sort of always interval train being a run/walker. They do say you burn calories for longer with intervals, but they keep changing the science or our understanding of it 😀.

This article is brilliant! Really clear explanation. I can't believe I didn't know this! I've been running for 3 years, before that swimming for 5 or 6, I've always done some form of exercise, and I didn't know this! I shall not feel so bad about my slow pace now, and will positively embrace slow running! Thank you Mooning I think you've just changed my running life xxx

It makes me feel much better when people overtake me.

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply tomooning

I'd like to overtake someone else - just once! Still, now I know how to speed up - more slow running! Sounds counterintuitive doesn't it?

tizzicat profile image
tizzicatGraduate in reply toCurlygurly2

I did a "fun run" a few years back (I mostly walked it), but was determined not to be beaten by the big white rabbit! I did manage to overtake him, but was beaten by Superman!

Good article with a nice clear explanation of aerobic/anaerobic. As well as that, there's also the difference between fast-twitch muscles and slow-twitch muscles - there's a clue in the name - which could also explain your different hunger sensations after the run.

As well as understanding the why, I guess the main take away (no, not kebabs!) is that you DO feel different. Now that you've realised it, you can prep by making sure you've got in the house what you know you'll need depending on which type of run you're planning on doing.

Curlygurly2 profile image

*runs off to Google fast and slow twitch muscle*

Perhaps cos Speed is so blummin tricky! I think you concentrate that much it wears you out. Mental hunger! You couldn't make it up.
