Sneaked out of the back gate ....

W1R1 - wow, actually did it, the VERY FIRST RUN! Sneaked out of the back gate early, so few people could see me, feeling very self conscious and not knowing quite what to expect. In fact I'd been dreading it and had yesterday made every excuse to myself, any possible way to let me not do it. I even woke up in the night with a nightmare about it. So this morning it was, W1R1, out first before breakfast and before I changed my mind, probably would never have done it if I hadn't done it today. It turned out that the few people I did see simply smiled and acknowledged me, no quizzical looks and certainly no amused and pitying looks. The irony is that living very near to my gym, W1R1 nearly took me to my gym and back. (Memo to self, walk to the gym and leave the car at home!) THANK YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. WITHOUT READING THE BLOGS I WOULD PROBABLY HAVE GIVEN UP BEFORE I EVEN STARTED TODAY. The "runs" were slower than the brisk walk I think, but never mind I'll just have to work on that.

Hooray! You're off the starting blocks! You'll soon find that nobody pays you too much attention when you are out running. So no need to be self conscious. Running to the gym sounds like a great idea!

Keep going..... you won't regret it. I was like you and was worried everyone would know I was a novice but I've learnt to look them in the eye and say 'good morning' to everyone I pass - they probably think I'm weird - but it makes me feel better!!

Well done! Getting started is so hard, but you did it! When I started my running buddy could walk throughout my "runs" I was that slow!

Wooohooooo! Well done on starting. I graduated last month and only this week did my first 5k - my running is still slower than my walking I think. Slow and steady will help you succeed - this is the one bit of advice everyone gives!!! Even Laura tells you on one of the runs "remember, it's stamina not speed that is important" or something to that effect. My very first run - I remember that sick feeling in your stomach well - like it was yesterday. You've done the hardest bit - well done in getting out there - I'm excited for you and the journey you've just embarked upon. :D :D :D

Thanks, everyone. Wouldn't have even started without you guys! I know Laura says "take a day off", but I'm due with my trainer at the gym tomorrow ... so we'll see how it goes when I let her 'encourage' me again on Wednesday

It's taking a day off the high impact of running (although it depends what the trainer has in mind for you...let her know you've run)

Thank you for such a great post which encapsulates so many thoughts so many of us have and bravo for getting that first run started... and completed!

Well done, and welcome to the madhouse! Feeling self-conscious soon disappears - people won't notice you because you are just another nutter in trainers. We're at least as common as little old ladies walking their dogs. By the end of this you'll be buying yourself garish kit and wearing it with pride. Keep us posted!

Well done you. You're lapping everyone still on the couch.

I did such a good job of convincing myself that no one was looking at me that I think that subconsciously I think I'm invisible. I'm always irrationally amazed if a friend says, "We saw you out running the other day"!

Wahay! You've joined the ninja runners. It helps if you believe yourself to be invisible as it saves skulking about in woods and parks after dark

Leaving the car at home should be your default from here on in. Forget it and walk! Walking is a great cross training exercise so make it a habit for life. It's surprising how much fitter you'll get quite quickly. You will soon get to know every inch of your neighbourhood too! You miss so much sat behind the wheel of a car. I flew past folks stuck in traffic today and felt proper chuffed. They looked so down in the mouth. I couldn't stop grinning

Just keeping going. No matter what. Be a sticker. Slow is good. No need for speed. It's all about finishing the sessions. Most of all, have fun!

Thanks ... "enjoyed" isn't quite the word I would have used, in fact it doesn't even come close as it's not in my extensive vocabulary of swear words! BUT, you're right in that I'll do it again ... in fact I am "sort of" going to ignore Laura tomorrow, not leaving a day in the middle - but I won't run, well maybe just a little TINY TINY bit, just a a brisk walk to the gym & leave the car at home (snag is I'll have to walk back home as well!!!!!!!). You'll never know how much the blog helps people like me. XX
