Nose to the treadmill. ..

So. We've joined the gym. Yes, we've become one of "those" couples who everyone wants to punch on the nose. Anyway, I ran on the treadmill for the first time ever. Some observations : firstly, it is nothing like running outdoors - it's like comparing fillet steak and tofu; both are protein but.... I ran for 30 minutes with ease whereas outdoors I'm exhausted after 20. Secondly, I believe I sweated about a gallon of liquid. Air con clearly not up to the task. Lastly, it was lovely being able to run next to MM rather than lag behind like an asthmatic tortoise so that's a huge bonus. So, I've ticked off the 25 minute run on the app but feel a bit fraudulent as it felt too easy. Thoughts?

I can see your point as I've been running on the treadmill recently and whilst you can set a speed you're comfortable with, it is is subtly different to outdoor running. One thing to bear in mind if running on the treadmill in order to get the same workout, on the treadmill compared to running on the flat outside, is to set the incline to 1 degree. This should mimic the resistance of pushing through the air as if you were outside.

I had it set to 1 degree - it felt very odd when completely flat! In fact, I almost fell over. Had an induction at the gym this morning and the man said to do intervals of 1 min at 8kph (my usual pace) then 1 min at 10kph for 10 mins. That was a proper challenge. ☺

That's good you're doing some intervals at a faster pace it will all be of benefit in the long run...ahem.

In any event some running whether on a treadmill or outside is better than no running at all.

a run is a run is a run, outdoor or in. Your right it is very different but its still a good run even though it feel easier. Its consistent in speed and incline so even though it feels easier its just that you are not coping with the different forces of nature as well and it as a good training session for muscles and consistency.

I did wonder that. There were no flies in the mouth, treacherous kerbs or unsuspecting pedestrians to manoeuvre around so maybe that's why it felt easier ☺

Ha ha, I had to laugh at your post. Howard and Hilda! Tee hee

Have you got matching outfits? If not, you soon will have

Running outdoors is just fab. Free and fab. Running on a machine is for a hamster. Break loose from the gym and head off into the wide blue yonder. It's where its at!

☺ our names are Jane and Jon which is so twee as it is! We joined a) to build muscles (I appear to have none in either arms or legs) b) so I can quickly build fitness - running for short bursts etc. And c) the lovely swimming pool ☺ road running (beep, beep) is where we will do the longer runs

Ooooh lovely, a swimming pool. What luxury! Me and my old man call ourselves Howard and Hilda (or should that be Howard and Marina) Tee hee. Matching cycling jumpers next and finishing off each other's sentences. He goes to the gym and sits in the sauna, has coffee and bacon sarnis. I don't go as I'm a peasant, but I do my exercise at home to Jillian Michaels DVD's. She kicks ass!

As long as we keep moving ey, that's the main thing. Have fun!!!
