Running Shoes...

Hello all, I've been lurking about on this forum for a while as I make my way slowly through the weeks. I'm now at w6 r1 and am loving it having never ever tried to run before.

I am wondering whether my trainers are ok though as I've had them for about 10 years and although they seem fine to me I'm very aware that I wouldn't recognise a good running shoe from a bad one even if it kicked me in the head so I wondered if there are any pointers you could please share?

Thanks in advance!

If you can, go to a proper running shop and get gait analysis as the staff will be able to assess how you run (e.g. how your feet land on the floor as you run) and therefore what the best kind of shoe for you is that will support your running. I went to an Asics store and recommend it.

oh and welcome to the forum! glad you're enjoying c25k :)

I completed c25k in a pair of old trainers, braving the running shop a few weeks after graduation. I couldn't believe the difference a pair of proper, suitable shoes made. Cut out all the niggles and stiffness and underpinned a period of solid progression. If you can afford it, it's worth it. Do go to a proper running shop where they know what they are doing.

Pop along to your local running store for a gait analysis which should be free and they will advise you if your current shoes are okay or what shoes you need. You don't have to buy anything straight away; although you will probably want to!

A proper pair of running shoes are so worth it.

I got decent shoes from the word ,go. Not the most expensive, bought a recognised reliable brand, and perfect. I did not go to a shop, bit my podiatrist, who visits me at home checked my feet out etc.. and then I bought, online, based on many years of wisdom..ha ha! :) They have been fantastic and I have bought a new pair exactly the same as my old faithfuls are at some point, going to give up!!

But.. however you do this, you will really appreciate the decent running shoe!

I would say definitely get new trainers for a nunber of reasons: a) they are comfy if properly fitted b) they make you feel like a "proper" runner and not someone who's late for a bus and c) they're just lovely. ☺

Hi Janey1020

Pretty sure you are a woman after my own heart as we are (I think based in your own post) the same age and at the same stage of c25k... Where did you get yours from?

Am a bit nervous about going into a running shop and pretending to be a 'proper' runner! Am not exactly a whippet shaped lass... Eeeeek!

It's fine. Really it is! The place I went to was an independent place and happily the owner was of our vintage. He was very sweet and said it was good to have got so far in what I can only describe as trainers one up from Green Flash. Mine are called Zoom. I love them ☺ go for it

I suggest the trip to the running shop too. It's not as scary as I thought! I am sure they will look at your gait and give advice then you can see what is available and go from there.

As all comments above..... plus, it's a tradition here to post a pic of your new shoes for us all to drool over. :)

After completing week 1 I knew if I was to stand any hope of pulling this off I would need decent shoes. I went to the local running shop, explained & they were great. I only had to run a short distance on a treadmill whilst they recorded my feet & then they showed me on the computer & explained everything. It really was very relaxed & easy. The toughest part was they wanted me to run along the high street in the shoes I tried on so I could see which ones were best, not somewhere I'd have chosen to run normally lol

Just to add, it felt so much better running in the right shoes, it was well worth it all
