Tips for someone on long term Injury Couch needed...

Hello, I wonder if there are a few of you out there who have befallen injury, and have been out of action for quite some time? I could do with some suggestions for keeping the moral up, I can't see myself running again for a couple of months yet. The svelt figure and graceful, hairflowing jogger I'd imagined will not be appearing this summer I fear, and I'm now only hobbling after my toddler, whereas the whole idea was to be more fit to keep up with him! It is frustrating isn't it. I know I'm having a moan but I was really enjoying the improvement in my mood and stress relief just going up to Wk2 gave me before my knee packed up. Suggestions please!

The first thing is to be sure that you actually need to be on the injury couch ie you've consulted a running-sympathetic GP, physio or sports therapist and got some sort of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan.

The treatment plan may well point to what you can be doing in the meantime in itself (the injury couch is not necessarily restful!)

Mmm, good advice, but does a runner of 2 weeks really deserve a sports therapist, I couldn't really take myself so seriously or call myself a 'runner', having crashed out so early on!

But I will see the physio and ask anyway - save myself from doing any more damage!

Poor you and how frustrating! A year ago I Was in the same position as you. Just started week 2 and then badly sprained my ankle (not whilst running) and was out of action for 10 weeks. I could barely walk on it so even walking was out of the question for a while. I did manage to do yoga that gave me an all round toned feel and helped my overall well being. . I love your vision of the svelte and graceful runner with flowing hair! I can't say even now I am one of those. Not exactly svelte and my hair never flows, just makes me look like a wild woman with a beetroot red face! However you will recover but the other advice was good to go get it checked out and hope you are up and running soon. I am still running a year later with no probs with ankle and long every minute of the running journey! ☺️

Hi, great inspiration hearing your recovery and still running after a year, bodies are amazing aren't they! Doubt I will ever be svelte again though, that probably is unrealistic. Getting back into yoga again after many years too .

Oh no I'm so sorry that you've been in pain and out of action - must be so frustrating . I'm only starting too but like others have advised perhaps a diagnosis/ treatment plan would help you feel more in control. Is there perhaps other forms of exercise eg cycling that would put less stress on the knee? I hope you recover soon and wish you all the best🍀🍀🍀🍀

Mmm, I do love to cycle but it's a bit early for that yet I think, any jolts, or weight bearing is excruciating!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you have been injured. A few years ago I had a really bad knee--I was not running at the time but I've always exercised. It's really frustrating.

However on the bright side--you can workout your arms and core.

Oh no didn't realise you were still on the IC. How frustrating for you. I think everyone's said it, get it checked out but also try other things. I notice there is a flex and strength app on the nhs website (I think that's the name) I was going to check it out when my back began to play up at w2 and I nearly stopped running. Could there be something there you could follow? It looked to have a similar sort of structured format. It would build your core strength up and give you that sense of going forwards? I have been out with bad knees twice and running just isn't worth it during those periods. I try and do yoga every day which is great for mood. I personally like yoga with adriene on you tube. Her videos are about 20 minutes a day and there are various videos including 2 30 day programmes. It's not running but it does make you feel good!

I'm on week 8 on the injury couch with a torn calf muscle from week 5. It's very frustrating but once I accepted it helped. Doc said two to three months rest so hopefully not long now, and physio advice was to start at the very start again and running on the spot so no propelling motion at first . Hoping to start next week or so once I have a couple of days with no aching or soreness

Seems like a long time! But I guess I can find some other healthy project to keep me occupied- hope something grabs me soon. Glad to hear you're on the mend though and hoping to return to the program.
