Disheartened!

Feeling very disheartened.  W4r1 yesterday,  headed out in the rain with big ideas that I would be able to run/jog for 5 minutes.  By 3 and a half minutes I had to stop.   The podcast went on and I struggled and skipped the last run and went home deflated!  Not feeling the need to get out there anytime soon.  Apologies for the whinge!

That's disappointing, but don't beat yourself up. One cure for a rubbish run is a doing a better one. Why not have your day's rest and then repeat wk3r3 to build your confidence back up?  Keeping going when it's all going well is easy, it's when you push yourself on when it's hard that you find out what you're made of! Good luck x

It is disheartening when a run does not go according to plan.  But it does happen to all of f us and at every stage of our running.  The key thing you have to learn is not to read anything sinister into it.  It wasn't the end of your running career, it wasnt a sign that this isn't for you, it wasn't a failure on your part. It was just a run that didn't go according to plan. Scowl a bit, swear if you like. Kick the furniture (not the dog!). Then take a deep breath and let it go. Have a rest day tomorrow and then go out on Saturday and do the run again. Onwards. Upwards. Per ardua ad Astra.

Well... maybe *kicking* the furniture is not the best idea for a runner. ;)

I found week 4 to be the most difficult of them all since the running time is almost doubled and actually had to stop in run 2 because of ankle/hip pains. I took the advice of everyone on this forum and slowed my running speed. I still struggled with this week even after slowing down, but I managed to run (shuffle) my way through it. Try repeating a week 3 run if you like, or slow down and try week 4 again. Neither approach is right or wrong - whatever works for you. Good luck!

I went out this morning and had a terrible run. Just could not get into it. Did a few 6 minute runs and that was that.

I will get up and out the next time knowing that it will all come good again (fingers crossed :) )

Sorry to hear that :-(

What were your 'symptoms' that caused you to struggle?

Hi John_w I felt that I couldn't move my legs more than a brisk walk.  I havhadd slowed my jog as struggle with breathing sometimes.  I think I gad a negative mood before I started and felt that 5 minutes was going to be too much!

Hi - it sounds like you know what the reasons were. You want to make sure you leave enough time after you've eaten - at least an hour - and make sure you're hydrated, but not too much. a cup of tea or just water an hour beforehand is all you need.

And think POSITIVE! :-) If you go at the right speed, then anyone can complete the program :-)

Now get out there and just get on with it :-)

John

OK, sometimes we achieve a little less than we were hoping for but you have actually done something I still haven't been brave enough to do.......you went out in the rain!

There is usually something we can pin a disappointing run to, did you sleep OK, good/bad food choices, not enough to drink, were you dressed right, what sort of day had you had....the list goes on. Whatever it was, try to learn from it and move on. (Sometimes there is no reason, it just wasn't meant to be). Every run is different, sometimes we struggle, sometimes it's hard, occasionally it feels fantastic.

Moving forward, you need to ditch the defecit and concentrate on the positive, in other words, stop worrying about what you didn't do, and concentrate on what you did do. You went out, got some exercise, and did it in the rain. Well done.

Hi Slowstart looking in hindsight I aent not long after lunch and definitely hadn't drunk enough water. Also my mind and head were thinking no way  I could do 5 minutes!
