Lots of thoughts today as I set out on my second Stamina run.. Did the first try on Sunday... different and quite exciting, ( see last post) !

Stamina is, as a few folk have suggested to me...quite addictive. It comprises a lovely run, and without any stop start-pressure, there is very much an element of just running for the sheer joy of it.

This morning was a stunner. White frost and an unreal blue sky, pink frill tipped, and the faintest of white clouds overhead. Half-term, so all fairly quiet and a chance to head out a little later. I was extra careful when setting out... after Sunday's, Bambi on Ice scenario, but weirdly, the pavements were clear, just the odd frozen sparkle in the shade. The sun's warmth is getting stronger with every passing day. Cheers the heart.

A brisk warm up five minutes and then into the first phase... a good steady beat and I managed to set a good pace... despite the icy air trying to creep through my Buff. I passed a couple of dog walkers and a lady defrosting her windscreen, and giving me a cheery good morning. No decision to make today, I was heading out to the lanes and the fields. Into the village and past the station and up the hill past Rookery Wood...I know this way so well, and it is still one of my favourite runs. My plan was to head up the hill and into the field I went into on Sunday. It was frozen then, so I thought, I could run across the top, down through the field to the far lane and into the next village, then retrace my route! No lanes with skiddy patches and no broken limbs! However, I realised that it was really, really cold.. could the field where I did the mud run the other day, be frozen... . was it worth a look? Pace had increased now and I was enjoying the freedom of the run.

Off I trotted along the track way and into the field. Sure enough... frozen solid. Muddy peaks, solid, white edged and glistening in the sunshine. Wonderful. Hedgerows tipped with the fast melting rime, but the ground firm, bumpy, uneven, but solid. I simply ran and ran.

As the lovely poppypug said to me in a post...When Laura disappears for a while, you think she has wandered off somewhere, and who would blame her. The fields stretching away in a sparkling sea of frost, the far distance shimmering in a silvery grey haze and the sun warm on my back. Towering trees on the edge of the fields and the banks of the far ridge behind me.

There are four big fields between me and the Steam railway line, at this point, so, I ran around the perimeter of all of them! The run was not easy, as the ground was so hard, but it was amazing, the pace changes just follow on naturally, and you, quite literally take them in your stride. The absolute pleasure of being out in the countryside, nothing to prove and everything to gain. Simply breathtaking.

My run was too soon over, a final burst, to finish in style...exhilarating and satisfying; and as I walked down, across the very path which had been such a quagmire on Friday, now, still frost covered, but melting slightly, a small rabbit sprang up in front of me; either he wasn't paying attention or I was treading lightly!

So, Stamina... I love it and yes.. I think I may get hooked.

Now, those of you who know me, know this is a very short post...however; all the time I was running on the hard, frosty ground, I had this running through my head...so, with massive apologies to Christina Rossetti.. who I love and the carol which is one of my favourites...and with apologies to my lovely friends on here... I just couldn't help it!

Stamina

In the bleak midwinter, the Oldfloss took a run;

Ground was hard as iron, but there was at least, the sun.

Frost had glittered, frost on frost, almost looked like snow.

On the field on Oldfloss's run, just a few hours ago!

It's just a run like others, but a longer time

Pace is changing, slow to fast, but the beat is fine.

Laura keeps you going, murmurs in your ear;

Sometimes she seems to wander , best to keep her near.

So, if you want to try it, make sure the ground is dry

On a winter's morning, with frost and clear blue sky;

Run for all the distance, run with flying feet;

Thirty five long minutes...and now... your run's complete!

Sorryx

That sounds fabulous. I just want to run where you run, I love the way you write. Well done you for finding enjoyment in running. I haven't quite got there yet, even first time round when I did this, I never really felt enjoyment, just satisfaction knowing it was better than sitting on the couch. Well done and the Carol is my favourite too, you have been very clever with it.

I do take all my friends on here with me, in my head. It;s wonderful! :)

Lots of what folk post sticks with me in all sorts of ways.

Maybe just let yourself get lost in the running? You can let lots of things come to the surface, and then release them in to the open air...The podcasts for Couch to 5K+ are so different, and the Stamina one just seems to be a perfect one to let yourself go...:)

Yeah I can't say o enjoy all the running either. The first few minutes are like nasty medicine: but you know it's good for you! And you do feel so good afterwards, as you say!

Makes my feet itch - but no, not till tomorrow. And then in the dark. A lovely run you describe there - reminds me why I'm doing this!

Oooh.. I think when the lighter nights come, I may get out there.. But I a morning runner... however, it's good to shake it up a bit... so maybe when it gets a tad lighter... :)

The whole running bit is so many things to so many folk.. it really is the most incredible thing... how we do it, why we do it, when we do it? The seen and unseen benefits are amazing :)

Enjoy your runx

Have a go... you will love it...!

I am so lucky being able to head out on days like yesterday.( Obviously retirement means I am really wrinkled and old, though) :)

This morning is pretty.... horrendous! So, glad that tomorrow is forecast slightly better... maybe just snow!!!!

The run is different, but when you get into it, you just lose yourself in the running... not sure where I go next? :)

Old floss please don't apologise, you are doing us a favour. Your enthusiasm and descriptions are wonderful.

I think now I have to download Stamina. it sounds exciting. I only have the first bit of C25K+ Somehow didn't or couldn't download the rest.

I just have to do it.

Thanks for you lovely narrative

Thanks you.... I am finding it odd, about the way my running and writing are linked... ( even the silly fun bits) I have started writing again and painting too, This running releases so many locked away issues and releases them.

It is a great podcast.. I think I am going to do another repeat on Thursday, then not sure.... I am wondering if I can put a sort of Couch to 5K+ mix together... mixing speed and stamina...Have to work on that :)

You go for the Stamina, it is different, but I feel you will enjoy it! :)

Let me know?

Well. some of them are a bit like a farce... but hey.. it's all about the running and just being out there! :)

As others have said, great post! I love that Carol too and I'm sure Christina Rossetti would approve of your 'tweaks'.

Sounds like you're another convert to the joys of Stamina. I can't wait until I'm fit enough to run it again. MissWobble has the c25k+ podcasts on her playlist, I believe, so they just pop up at random when she's out for a run, and I know Curlygurly often puts on Stamina at the end of a long run to help her finish in style. Me, I've used it as motivation on cold wet evenings to get myself out of the front door when I've wanted to run but needed that extra push. Have also used it at Parkrun to add a bit of a spring to my step :) :)

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toAncientMum

Great ideas there for me.. thank you..I was sort of wondering how to get things to link :) I am going to work on those ideas...

Well I hope Christina is not too upset... trouble is.. I see things, then I get the tune in my head and after the words sort of spill out... !

Never quite know what's going to be written..

I am looking forward to running in France when I go over in August.. can't imagine what that will be like, but I hope it is going to be warm.. and DRY! :)

JaySeeSkinny profile image
JaySeeSkinnyGraduate in reply toOldfloss

I might be running in France 2 weeks after graduation. Will be my first holiday as a runner and the question is whether I will be strong enough to keep it up with a different routine (I will definitely be getting up later!) or when I don't know the routes? Also whether I'm going to "come out" in a large group of family and friends and face all the inevitable questions. So far I've been keeping pretty quiet about running. Hubby knows I disappear off regularly but he doesn't know I'm doing C25K or how serious I've been getting about running. Mostly because I do it when he's not around (we only really see each other at weekends because of his shifts). Come graduation time I think I'll enlighten him!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toJaySeeSkinny

Little bit sneaky there... but good fun. he will be amazed and delighted I should think.

I think you should just come out... let everyone know how brilliant you are, 'cos you are! :)

Proudly running in the early morning French sunshine... oh yes...:)

I can't wait.. I already have at least two routes planned...although I will be getting out there early, before it gets too warm!

You're gonna' have to keep me posted, on how it goes, please!

Oooh, that brought back memories of singing every day in Primary School!! Sounds like a wonderful run, I think that the C25K+ podcasts sound really interesting.

Yep.. and you look young enough for me to have taught you..:)

I taught Music too, in addition, to my other posts... at the school I taught at for the last twelve years...( no post for that though...hmmm))....assemblies, choir, recorder group at lunchtime. concerts, plays. eeek!

Life and running now, so much easier.. and quieter! :)

Yes, when you Graduate...(how good does that sound)... you are going to have to try them out.... such fun!

Well done old thing! Still haven't mastered the stamina one and it's so heavily raining today, it won't happen just this minute!

What s lovely morning though! We've had so few proper wintery mornings this year. It sounds a great run for you!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate

Yep.. not bad for an old 'un...:)

It was, truly a beautiful morning... I meant to put a photo on my post..but forgot!

When it stops raining..if it stops raining... try it.. you will love it I am sure...:)

Gorgeous post as usual floss. You really do have a gift with words. Thank you for giving me such vivid descriptions of your runs as I just feel that I'm there with you!

And we really must be virtual twins what with serendipity being one of our favourite words and now I see we have Christina Rossetti in common! One of my all time favourite poems is "When I am Dead My Dearest" and probably the only poem I can recite!

And I think I prefer your version of the carol than hers! Lovely stuff! x

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toIrishprincess

Hi you...how are you doing?x

Yes.. I definitely think that we are kindred spirits. I think that poem is so beautiful.. sad, yet not....

I remember reading Goblin Market, when I was fairly young.. fascinated me, but terrified me...gosh.. going to have to look all these up and read them again.:)

The run was brilliant...I am doing one more Stamina tomorrow, if the weather is okay.. I am planning a route by an old fishing pond, in a small copse of trees, were I used to walk with the children.. have not been there for a very, very, long time.

We will see how the run shapes up.. it is a tad hilly!

I will tell you all about it when I get back :)

I'm good thanks floss. Still bored on the IC and pining for a run 😢 but another day closer to the scan and a diagnosis 😊. Enjoy your run today. It's glorious here. x

Just love it!

Old Floss your enthusiasm for running is contagious - you're really giving these stamina podcasts everything you've got and then some! Very, very well done you :)

Sounds like another gorgeous run, conjured up a lovely picture for us all again.

These posts of yours make us greedy. I think you may need to pull another 'Floss special' remix out of the bag next time too... "More pretty ditties please Old Floss!" The demanding C25K fans cry!

Simply awesome! :) x

You are so lovely!!!!

I hope people just think...I want to get out there, somewhere to breathe in the air and let go of the worries.

I have gotten the Stamina bug I think.. and because there is not a lot in the way of changes and time pressures.. I have so much time to soak up everything around me and let the words just tumble around in my funny old brain!

It is a great run.. and really gives you chance to perfect your running style too.

Are you out on Friday..? Will it be an indoor or a Great Outdoor run?

I am out tomorrow... weather and snow????? permitting! :)

Running-scared profile image

:) I hear you and I get you... Who would've thought running in the open air would be such a tonic, but it really is... These posts help us to see that, then we experience it, believe it ourselves and know it to be true... But nobody puts it as eloquently as old Floss. ;)

Ran today (will post an update in a minute, it's been a crazy work day!) and will run again Friday, then Sunday.... then I'm now sure probably every other day for a very long time, if not forever! Ive caught this bug, like you... :)
