So I have completed my first Session yay! The hardest bit was walking in the gym (I am a gym-phobic and totally intimidated by the whole experience) but I did it!!!

I plan to do this on a treadmill (Too embarrassed to run on the road) will it still work and are there any tips for incline etc. to get the best out of this?

Well done!

Getting started will always be the hardest part, whether that's on the road or in the gym.

Plenty of people have done the course on a dreadmill and many more start on one but graduate to the outside world before the end. I have heard it said that a 2% gradient on a treadmill makes it approximately equivalent in effort to road-running, although personally I can't stand the things and so I can't support that first-hand because I have only run on them about twice.

The overriding message, however, is that it doesn't matter where or how you do the course - if you get out and run three times a week according to the program then your fitness and general well-being will take an enormous boost from it.

Good work getting started - keep it up and you'll be a runner before you know it!

Hi, well done on starting the plan :-)

Of course you can do it on a treadmill - I did it last year but when I came to go outside for a run it was so much more difficult so if you are thinking about eventually getting outside for a run, I would perhaps mix it up a bit.

Good luck :-D

Really well done for completing your first run. You've taken the hardest step and done the hardest run too, imo.

It's interesting what you say about being embarrassed running outside as I think an awful lot of people feel the same way about walking into a gym and you've done that!

I did most of the programme on the treadmill because of an injury but couldn't wait to get outside as it's so much nicer and the air is fresher! I do understand how you feel about being too embarrassed to be seen outside and lots of new runners feel exactly the same. But honestly, no one notices as they are too wrapped up in their own lives/phones to notice anything! Go for a walk and see how many people look at you. It's the same when you're running.

However, you can still complete the programme on the treadmill. Set an incline of 0.5-1.0 as this gives a better feeling of running outside. It doesn't matter where you run as long as you run. Good luck and enjoy this life changing, fabulous programme.

Oh yes, I have to agree. I would much sooner run outdoors than go to a gym - it just feels as though eyes are always on you in those places :-(

Thanks everyone! This is also the first time I have joined a forum so hoping all you lovely people will be my support and encouragement.... all other previous attempts at getting fit fall flat!!

As for the gym, it is handy as on the way to work and at 6am is empty so ideal for me! I do hope once I am feeling more confident I can get out on the road as think it would be farm more rewarding getting a visual as you go and of course nothing beats fresh air!!

I was the same and completed up to week 7 on the treadmill. I converted to outside when I went on holiday and was forced to!! I haven't gone back in since!! It was hard to change to outside as I couldn't gauge my pace but after about 4 runs it was fine. Please consider going outside as it is so refreshing. I am still not confident to enter races etc but I just stick my headphones in and smile and nod to all passers by and shuffle along.

That said any running is good running just go with what keeps you motivated.

Well done for starting, that really is the hardest step to take. Just stick with the programme, there are so many benefits to be had, whether you run in or out. I have done both. When I started, I used my neighbour's treadmill when the weather was bad, now I just run outside whatever the weather and haven't looked back. I think you're brave going to the gym so well done you. Take it steady, check back on here for advice, inspiration, laughs, whatever, and you will be fine. x :-)

Bless you and well done. I did week 1 on my treadmill at home but decided to try the local park for week 2, and have not used the treadmill since. I feel the freedom to go where I want is more interesting. Nthere are so many runners now, don't think anyone notices me unless it is to say hello. Even run through teens on their way to school, no comments. My confidence is sky high now because I decided to try it

I am on Wk8 R1 and have done it all on a treadmill... Like you I wasn't ready to be out on the road yet, I did it on a 2% gradient seems to be ok... Main thing is you've made a start! Good luck 😉
