How far could I run at that pace? About 20 yards, then I'd be flat on my face :)

I agree with AM.

I'd last about 10 seconds!

No more than a few yards (and fewer metres). The Comrades (89 km) first ten come in under 6 hours (and the record is something like 5:28, I think). Can't imagine it, actually. They must be making a mistake.

No mistake at all Gary.

Marathon distance is 42km.

At 3 min/km that's 126 mins... 2 hours, 6 mins.

The world record is around 2:04 of course.

Astonishing isn't it?

It really is. Mind you, 3 min/km is then more like what most of the elite is reaching for, rather than hitting, then. But just to be aiming to hit that mark, you have to be superhuman.

But even some of the people not anywhere close to that do things that will always be impossible for the rest of us. The other day I was at the doctors, and the nurse had just done a first aid station at a local ironman, where the rough surf conditions eliminated a huge portion of the field. She says that one of the guys had an accident at the end of the 90 km cycle section, broke his arm, and first ran the 20 km running section before he had it seen to. How does someone do that??

No idea.

Always sobering to bear in mind that very good club runners are running their 5k's in 15-16 minutes and 10k's in around 32 mins and marathons in 2:20-2:30. There's plenty who can run fast and for long, but elites are elite for a reason! :-)

I wont even try to emulate that haha I just look at them in awe at their pace and the ease them seem to do it with ... inspiring but so out of reach

I am not sure that I could run at a 3min per K pace over ANY distance - my final velocity would never ever get there (except for maybe when falling off a high bridge somewhere!! ) :)
