Shoe advice
I recommend going to a specialist running shop where they can do a bio mechanical or gait analysis and assess what will give you proper support. If you have a max budget don't be afraid to tell them.
Hi Graduate2011, welcome, and best wishes for your running.
Investing in a pair of running shoes is one of the best 'anti-injury' steps that you can take (that and the 'free' advice of running slowly, and taking your rest days).
I'm sure that you'll get plenty of advice from the lovely folks here on this forum. I strongly recommend that you forget all about brands, and go along to your local specialist running store - SweatShop sponsor parkrun so I'll mention them - and get some professional advice. You'll need to get gait analysis to ensure that the shoe is suitable for your over/under pronation. This means that you'll have a little run on the treadmill in the store, whilst being videoed or the adviser carefully watching you running. So go along dressed for a run. If you are put off by the idea of gait analysis, then wait a few weeks until you are running a bit stronger. The store will want to know what surfaces you run on, how often you run and whether you want a 'fast' shoe ('responsive') or a comfortable shoe.
I mentioned it in a post earlier today... wait for a shortlist of 2-3 shoes to be recommended for you, have a little run in them, and then finally select based on brand (or colour). The shop will be delighted if you suggest a price-range that you want to spend.
Finally - please don't get a shoe recommended and then buy it online. And, it is compulsory to post a photo of your new shoes here once you have them
I agree with MarkyD re going to a specialist store. I had great service from sweatshop. They also gave me discount when I showed them my parkrun barcode! 😊
