Garmin Forerunner 10 anyone?

So, I've been running for 2.5yrs and am only just coming around to the idea that I might need to use more than the Nike+ app to track my progress. Do any of you have experience of this watch? Is it worth it? Or are there other options I should be looking at?

Thanks all.

I've got one and I like it. The more expensive ones do more whizzy things, but how whizzy do you want to be? It measures time, distance, pace, laps, calories and you can set it to do run/walk options or tell you when you are not keeping to a preferred pace. The only thing I would say, and I don't know if this is better on the more expensive versions, is that I can't hear the beeps when I'm outside, so I have to keep looking at it if I'm doing run/walks.

That all sounds great to me. Experience tells me that I want something simple so that I can set it as I begin and then not have to fiddle with any little buttons on the way around. I guess not hearing the beeps could be a bit of a problem but wonder whether a more expensive version would be any louder? I don't think I need anything fancier as, what you've described sounds perfect.

Thank you.

I've got a Forerunner 15, which is the same as the 10 but with the ability to link to a HR monitor. I love it, and wear it all the time so it counts my daily steps and nighttime movement too.

You just press a button as you start running, then stop it at the end. You can have it display combinations of pace, time, distance, it tells you each "lap" (mine's set to 1k laps) how long that took, and when you download your run it shows all the stats you're likely to need. The more expensive ones add measurement of cadence and perhaps other things too.

The FR 10 doesn't do step count of sleep movement, so if that interests you it might be worth looking into. I know I don't sleep well - don't need a device to tell me that!!!

Also, I believe the FR15 has a better battery life than the FR10, with it being the newer model.

I have a Forerunner 310XT which was the top of the range model about 5 years ago. A new one would be around £30 more expensive than the FR 10 (no Heart Rate Montor included at that price). It has the option of vibrate alerts so that you don't miss the beeps.

I have only had it for a couple of weeks (upgraded from an even older model) and so far, I can't fault it. It does have a lot of functions but you don't need to use them.

I have a TomTom runner, perfect complete with bigger display than Garmin, you will find Garmin slightly difficult to see whilst running. Currenty currys have the TomTom at £79 link to heart rate monitors as well. Good buy at that price.

I see in your previous post, you was asking what is the best thing for planning a route. I would recommend a site called walking highland, create a user account then you can view the 1/25th scale map, on here you will find pretty much every tack, trail or anything else in your area as well as all the UK, simply click to create your route. It will then tell you almost exactly how far that route is you've created. If you then had something like a Satmap 10/12 or Garmin Oregon 600, you could transfer the route to the device and walk it first or of course, go right ahead and run. The devices I mention are for walking not running, but the website is great for looking at what is on your doorstep or if you are stopping away can find whats near where you are going if want to walk or run.

I managed to pick up a used one on Ebay and it more than suits my needs (time elapsed, speed, average pace, best pace, distance run, elevation, calories burnt!). The more expensive ones do have extra information and come with a heart monitor but there's a perfectly good heart monitor on Amazon for £19.99 (reduced from £35.25) that I use with the FR 10. I particularly like the way it saves your run which you can upload to "Garmin Connect" to show the route you took but you really need to see it to appreciate it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Lots to think about there and some other options too, so I'll look into those. I need to try and make my pace a little more consistent so anything that will help me there would be a big bonus.

One last question - can you use the Garmin (or other device) for two runners? If I buy one, could my husband use it for his runs too? Or would that affect my stats?

Thanks again all - very much appreciated!

If it's of interest, I have a Forerunner 10 - gents size in black/red, that has been sitting in the box since I got a good deal on a Forerunner 220.

I only did a few runs with it before upgrading.

That might be of interest Peter. Probably too big for me, but my husband would like it, I'm sure. How much would you be asking for?

Have sent you a message.

I have a men's style FR15 (which is the same size as the FR10) and it fits me fine. I chose that one so that the display is bigger.

In answer to your earlier question, I don't think there is a way to share them unfortunately, as when you upload your runs it goes to a single account. So all your runs would be mixed together.
