Treadmill?
Hi Fraisse, have to own up to having a treadmill problem a couple of weeks ago. All the instructions were in Spanish and I wondered why I was finding it so difficult. After 15 minutes I realised I had it set on a 5 degree incline! Doh.
Personally I prefer the road, but I can see the benefit if there are weather related or pollution problems.
I can't imagine it! I've been loving running outdoors.
I agree with OG, I love running outside it feels so much better. I had to join a gym because it was just too hot outside (32 on average up to 37 on very hot days)
There are pros and cons for the treadmill - firstly its boring - what i like is outside the scenery changes and you never know what you will see, plus time goes so much quicker. Treadmill is much better for the joints and I felt the difference from going from the road to the treadmill. I like the incline setting i would strongly recommend you use this, because if you run outside it will make it easier - even a roads that look flat and innocent can have inclines! My treadmill at the gym even have a negative incline so you get that downhill feeling too.
Its really up to you but try outside too so you can compare. Or do a bit of both!!
I did over winter, and except for finding it mindnumbingly boring I think it's good.
I do mainly treadmill, because I live in a very hilly area! I have started doing a bit of both so I can get used to being outside. I think it would have put me off with some of the hills here. But now that I can actually see the improvement in week 5 I believe I can do it!
I've used one over the past couple of weeks due to work travel & not being familiar with my surroundings. It was fine just boring but much prefer running outside though.
I own a treadmill because like someone else posted it is vey hilly where I live and I would never of managed a 20 min run without out encountering some very steep inclines. Also means I have no excuse not to run, but somehow I still manage to find some. On the boredom front I have a TV on the shelf in front so watch an episode of a TV programme while running to keep me entertained.
I use a treadmill partly so I have no excuse. I tried running outside but my knees ached so much I had to give up and go home. I like the fact I know how fast I'm running and I also have it set up so I can watch TV to get through the boredom. Once I graduate - 5 more runs - i aim to build up running outside.
I use the treadmill all the time (except for Parkrun sometimes). Long runs can be boring, but it's great doing intervals because the time and pace are right there in your face. You can set the incline you want (1% will be about the same as flat outside). If I'm doing a long run I pretend I'm doing intervals 3 minutes at 6.3 then 2 minutes at 6.3 etc.
