Early mornings. Always. It's worth the effort in getting up early as then the run is done; you can get on with your day safe in the knowledge that your run is nicely out of the way and you're more awake and energised the others at work who are still shuffling about and waking up.
My hours are 0800 - 1730; this morning I did a 5 mile run, (I graduated C25K in June last year; it really works this program, give it a go!) getting up at 0430 to do so. The shorter runs of C25K will command less of your time and you'll not need to get up quite as early as that!
You do get used to running in the dark, but a head torch is a very good investment; I wish I'd bought one sooner. Make sure you're wearing something reflective as well.
Other benefits of running early are that it is much, much quieter. And on nights like tonight, you really get to appreciate the sight of a misty full moon.
Good luck whenever you decide to run; keep us posted and feel free to ask away if there's any questions you have. We're all friendly here!
I'm a bit like Miles - early mornings for me. Get up early and get it done! Recently invested in a head torch and some red flashy lights to strap to myself so that people, drivers and (very importantly) the deer in Richmond Park can see me coming!
Some people run in the evening and with the right gear, the right route and a bit of determination, the cold, dark and wet is no barrier to a run! Watch out for ice though...
I started C25K in March 2014 and on Sunday ran my second 13.1 mile distance in training - this programme is amazing and I encourage you to give it a go... you'll find 20-30 minutes in a day to get through the programme... and it'll change you forever!
Thank you all so much for your messages, looks like I'll be buying a head torch and heading out as soon as I have it in the morning to give it a go. One of my friends has just reminded me of the cycle track that is only a 5 minute walk from my house that I could use with a head torch.
Thank you all again looking forward to giving it a go
I did it when i got in from work except the weekend when i ran sat morning , i pretty much do the same now , quite like coming home from work changing and getting out for a run in all weathers
really it is what ever suits you and your lifestyle
I have really found myself enjoying running in the dark. And with earphones too, which is the complete antithesis of what I enjoyed about running in summer. In the dark with a bit of Mahler or Respighi and I am completely in my own little bubble. It is like floatation tank therapy, only with a higher heart rate.
