For my very first 5k-straight run I recorded a time of 33:24. Last week I managed it in 32:37 and last night I came in at a stellar

Oh, yeah! (I'm quite pleased with this. You may be able to detect the merest hint of triumphalism around the edge.)

Fartlek is my friend. I fartlek'd like a good 'un at various intervals.

Next on my hit list: sub-31 mins. And seeing somebody about the blue/grey fingers that I'm increasingly getting whilst running. And not being able to breathe properly.

Brilliant, very well done!

Just a little word of advice though ... you're not going to get a pb every week. Sometimes it's beneficial to have a period of a few weeks of "easy" runs (at a pace where you could talk - yes, seriously!!) and do fartleks or whatever interval training you want and then have another go. Running flat out frequently can increase your risk of injury.

But I don't want to put a damper on your achievements to date. I'm sure you'll get sub-30 minutes in the not too distant future, not just sub-31 (even though that would obviously be a great stepping stone) :)

No idea how to advise with regard to blue fingers though. Do you generally have poor circulation?

I was having a bit of a crappy day yesterday so running fast seemed like a good idea at the time :) I know that I'll not get a PB every week, nor will I aim for one. 10k training helps with the speed too.

With regard to the fingers, I'm being treated for iron deficiency but I'm not anaemic so it shouldn't be that. I do find it increasingly difficult to breathe through my nose even at rest, so think there's something going on there. And maybe a touch of asthma, but who knows? My circulation's generally good but I do have Raynaud's; this is something different. I do love my running but since I started it's brought on / forward a whole slew of systemic health problems!

Yes, running longer distances also helps. And I totally understand about running fast seeming like a good idea after a bad day. I'm sure your day improved somewhat after your pb :)

I think it would definitely be worth having a chat to your doctor about these symptoms.

Congratulations on the great times. I'd definitely mention your symptoms to the GP, if only to have any worries laid to rest.

To shamelessly plagiarise Slookie - you swank away all you want! It is part of the reward for all of that hard work you've done.

I haven't graduated yet (still on Week 8) but I've started to add in some home-made interval training too and I shall take your brilliant result as my justification for "going off piste" on the programme by doing this :-).

Swank away, that's a brilliant time. So envious, I feel miles away (Miles Yonder??) at 46 mins. I would see your doc about your fingers, last week when I tried to run with my bad back my fingers started to get pins and needles very quickly. I have a herniated disc that "goes" a couple of times a year, it constricts my diaphragm so that I can't breath in properly - so I'm guessing this is something to do with not getting enough oxygen.
