Speed: Hi peeps is a speed of 3'5 ok for a walk... - Couch to 5K
Speed
I think I read somewhere that an average walking speed is 1 mile in 20 mins, so 3miles per hour. More than 3 mile per hour is above average. Nothing is too slow with running, especially when you are getting started (unless you are in a proper race of course !)
I worried about what were seen to be the "right" sort of speeds and then realised I needed to go with what works for me. I walk at 3mph and I am running at 3.8 mph. I started out at 4mph on the runs, and for the final minutes of my 3 minute run on Run 3 of Week 3, I did push it back up to 4. I am running slowly, but I am still running.
Everyone will advise you that speed isn't the first thing to achieve - it is about running for the set amount of time. If you are comfortable running at 5mph, run at the speed. If you are struggling, slow it down a bit. What week are you on?
Just do what feels right for you. Speed is irrelevant whilst you're following the programme. You can worry about it once you've graduated, if you want to. At the moment it's all about how long you run for, not how far or how fast. Just really enjoy yourself and reap all the benefits running brings you
Ancient Mum is right - if you are doing NHS C25K then the best strategy is to forget all about speed. It's the keeping moving that counts!
I'm wondering though if you are asking because you are doing it on a treadmill, which does add a layer of complication. There are some folk here who have done it in full or in part that way and perhaps they will be along to give you their experience (I have the impression though that people who keep running longer term all move outside for at least some of their running eventually)
