Knees - i don't like ouchy knees :( how they get better soon. When i did real damage i ended up wearing a knee support as i couldn't walk, but it worked a trick. Now i make sure i do lots of stretches. Sorry not much help I'm afraid. I sure people will be able to offer much better advice.

Squats, lunges and leg raises is what I do.

Don't know if it's any help, but I was getting one seriously ouchy knee in week 9 not so much during runs, as for the remainder of the day and the following rest day (I could hardly walk). I paid attention to the way I was landing on that foot and it seemed I was coming down too hard and twisting it slightly, so I concentrated for a while on trying to put that right and it seems to have worked. Don't know if it would have made any difference if both were ouchy at once though....

I'm working on getting stronger in general, not just my knees. I think it's working as I've been injury free for quite a bit (touch wood) I'm running three days a week too. I do walking and exercise DVD's at home, yoga too. I bought a skipping rope too!

a skipping rope, now thats a thought, that would surely strengthen knees, wonder, can a 67 year old skip !!

I'd agree with Rignold and IrishPrincess above. Have a look at that link to the NHS Living Well pages. Skipping might be ok but it is very hard on the joints and that's what running can be too if your leg muscles are weak or misaligned. If your knees are ouchy then you don't want to make them worse. I haven't tried it but I understand bouncing on a small trampoline is effective exercise but kind to the joints and perhaps a little like skipping.

I can't remember how long you've been running but it takes time for the knees to adjust to the new regime! You might also think of consulting a sports physio if you can afford it. They have so much knowledge these days, they'll tell you if it's osteoarthritis (which it could be) and also be able to recommend specific exercises and stretches. I find the boring stuff like this (!) plus enough rest is the best thing for my ageing knees.
