Is walking ok.....feel a bit deflated....

I ran the 5 mile national lottery new ham run in London today but had to walk at the 3 mile post up a hill to the water (100 metres) and then again about 1 mile put for about 50 metres. The heat and humidity got me but mostly mental attitude as I knew I was pushing myself doing this run when my furthest so far is 5k. I feel good for going and doing it (bit of an effort to get to London) but feel a bit crap for walking? Any thoughts? At least I have a time now to beat of 56.04 minutes! I don't like these mile races though....wow it was a long way to the first marker at 2 miles!

Hope everyone had a good running weekend. Wonder how Miles and Treemouse got on???

Now for a large dry cider with ice and feet up for the rest of day....(oh oh here come the kiddies that's my rest finished!).

Don't feel sad You did it wow hurrah! And in the heat which makes it doubly hard. So well done you. I used to feel i had failed if I walked too but our running leader says it's absolutely fine and he even does it in marathons / ultra marathons. I think so entires we are too hard on ourselves and forget how hard we have worked to even think about running a race never mind 5 miles in the heat.

So no more sad face and enjoy what you have achieved - that's an order now.

Nelly??* spills tea in disbelief* What are you talking about?? Of course it's ok to walk in a 5mile run, especially if your furthest distance before was 5k! 5miles, that's 5MILES, in this heat (well at any time) is a bloomin' long way and you set a cracking pace. Very very well done, you should be massively proud of yourself! Now get some cider, put your feet up and join everyone else waiting for the run reports from Miles, Treemouse and TT. :)

Ah thanks mum I do need a bashing over the head sometimes so thanks for giving it to me! Ok smiling now fitfor60 so don't get mad at me too! Oh forgot about TT doing the 10ker...... Love you all xx

Nothing wrong with walking, and in this heat there is little wonder that you had to walk. If you had to stop and walk then that's what your body told you to do. I don't think there's ever a run I've done that I haven't walked. I was only doing 3 k today but I stopped for a walk. In the interests of self-preservation Nelly we walk!

That almost sounded like a protest. LOL.. I'll go make a placard ......

Enjoy your drink, you deserve it. I had a cocktail of sparkling water and elderflower cordial after my run this morning. Aaaaaaaaagh, lovely Cheers me dear

Thanks miss wobble, it's my first time walking so just getting the mental block sorted! I sure am going to enjoy my drinkie as I have been so good all week in the build up. Thanks for your support.

Nothing wrong with walking (ever) - but especially so on a day like today.. it's "rather warm" out there (even for an Aussie)...

Great time and how great you must feel to have finished! Cheers!

Thanks Aussie, was totally zapped last night so turned off all electronic devices and went to bed, hence the late reply. Feeling pretty stiff this morning but smiling!

Wow! You did it! Who cares if you needed to walk a little. Fantastic time and great effort to move up to 5 miles like that. Be proud of yourself ! We are...

Nelly, 5_miles_ in 56 minutes in this heat! You are amazing, well done. I reckon 5 miles is 8047 meters, and you walked for 150 of them, that is hardly a major problem, is it? You've gone from starting C25K in April to running 5 miles in July: YOU ARE FANTASTIC.

Congratulations!

Ok Markyd now that you put it like that I feel MUCH better, amazing what you can do changing the digits around. I must say I don't like these mile races and will stick to km in the future....way too far between markers for me! Thanks for your lovely words of support.

Wow Nelly, well done, and in such trying conditions. Don't beat yourself up over a couple of walks....as you said yourself that's the furthest distance you have ever tried and to do so in such weather is a great achievement .....brilliant, you deserve something cool and alcoholic now!

Don't be daft - most of us - except the super athletes walk a bit on the longer stuff. It's a brilliant achievement & a good time!!

Well done!!

Hi; I don't post here often now but wanted to say far better to have a little bit of walking than be collapaed flat out like one chap I passed at the run today about mile 4... (& that's a brilliant time; I was 1 minute slower than last year at 1.03!!! Always next year...!

Nellyharte profile image
NellyharteGraduate in reply toPoppy2010

Feeling very honoured you posted for me poppy as we haven't seen you for a while. I didn't see any casualties but heard after there were a few so much better to have walked than collapsed. The humidity of the city was something I didn't expect so I think different conditions next year and we might both shave off a few minutes. We could always move to a hot climate for a few weeks to so some humidity training.....mmm sounds good, thanks poppy.

Hopefully next year will be a proper British summer (nice cool rain) after two sunny runs last year and yesterday ;-)

If not climate training seems a good idea, preferably with a sea or mountain view! Then I might get under that hour (which is what I hoped for yesterday; but hadn't run much so my fault, damn that sun!) :-)

Thanks a fantastic achievement and don't feel bad at al about walking a little bit. Look at the distance covered and look at that time! Amazing and well done you ;)

Yes good time for a newbie runner so don't know why I was so hard on myself!

Treemouse profile image

Don't you dare feel bad! We've all done it, and we all felt guilty, but we were all given the same boll@cking (telling off!) and we all accept that sometimes it's necessary, and even beneficial. You did almost double your distance at the hottest time of the year! Go you! Xxx

Hey you 10ker I feel very proud this morning and a bit stiff so thanks for the support. Also smiling widely at your achievement and Myles and TT.

No, Nelly. NOTHING wrong with walking at ALL. I had to do it last week too. If you need to walk, then walk; it really is better to do that than have to be ambulanced to hospital! Please don't feel bad. You completed the race! YOU DID IT! And in a good time too, even with your walk!

You didn't fail for walking; failing would have been to not bother going! :-) I felt last week, really bad for walking, but only for a short while; I realised after that I needed to and there's nothing wrong with it. Congratulations, you did great! :-)

How are the legs feeling this morning Myles? Hope no boggles or pains. I am jumping into a warm bath just to be sure to be sure ( sorry that's the Irish coming out ). Still grinning like the proverbial cat?

Miles_Yonder profile image

Hey Nelly! :-)

Sorry, this is the first opportunity I've had all day to reply!

Just to clarify, walking is never bad. You completed the course - you did it! :-)

My legs feel a bit better now; the Achilles ache continued on but has eased now. I realise what the problem was, I think. In my joy at getting to the finish and excitement at getting my shiny shiny medal, I didn't do a cool-down walk or much stretching. Next time I will do a proper stretching routine, no matter how silly I look, and a cool-down walk!

Yes, been grinning away all day! :D How about you? Ah yes, I know you're from Ireland; sometimes my Yorkshireness comes across on here, tha knows!

Boggles is my new word for niggles! I can hear the northern tones in your posts....love the Yorkshire accent and they have same sense of humour.

I was considerably more stiff today than I expected and l DID do my exercises bit no cool off walk so we have both learnt our lesson for next time.

Taking an extra day off tomorrow and back running Wednesday. Enjoy your week.

Nelly, you did great...you finished! 2 months ago I did a Color Run and when it was posted, it was posted as a flat, paved course. When the day came, we discovered that they changed the course to a trail run and it was all uphill and down hill and mostly on wet grass. Now over here in the USA, these runs are also promoted as easy 5ks....not this one. I and a lot of others ended up walking almost the entire run. I was glad that it wasn't a timed run. The only thing that I looked forward to was that at the end, I had a jacuzzi to go home to. Remember there are no losers...just finishers. :)

Thanks kk, yes I agree u might only mention the walking bit to a few people! Was very pleased with my time thanks.

Yes gin in finishing is the key word! I am totally jealous of your jacuzzi, would have loved one last night....onwards and upwards and just googling 10 k. Races!

Morning Nelly, i'm sorry, hadn't realized you were also racing yesterday!

Had a quick flick down your thread now and am delighted to see you've got over your disappointment .... you did BRILLIANTLY! Very well done you! That is a very very long way indeed!

Hope your stiff legs soften up again by the end of the day! :-)

You ran 8KM after graduating a few weeks ago? I'm gobsmacked! What an inspiration to us all...

That hill was absolute HELL whatever possessed them to put it that far into the run! There were a lot of people walking at that point and I think what I was doing only just qualified as running. The run through the shower at the top was wonderful though!

Five miles is more or less spot on 8k. The ol' Garmin kept me sane by buzzing at me every km, but I do agree it seems along way between the markers. So quite Bizarre how they counted down the final straight with markers that read "300m to go" the "200m to go".
