No going back now. I've just signed-up for the Brighton Half Marathon. February next year. It's the 25th anniversary of it, so should be great. No idea what I was thinking, but it's a goal to work towards. To Brighton! :-)

All I can say is, you're a damn sight braver than I am. Go for it, and good luck!

Brave or stupid, can't decide which! :D (or a combination of the two!) And thanks, Becca! :-)

Thank you, Carole! I hope so; plenty of time to train and prepare so all should be well! :-)

Brilliant! A friend was asking me to enter one in October and I felt it was too soon and I might burn out or just end up hating running. This is so well timed, and you are so brave! To Brighton indeed!

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply toemkeenan

Thanks, Emily! Yeah, I was considering one for around the same sorta time but I already have 10Ks in October and November. A HM as well may be a step too far for the reasons you've outlined, but February is enough time to train for and get prepared. Plus there's the added bonus of it being early in the year; with a HM looming over the horizon, it means I'll be good and won't overdo Christmas! At Christmas people never accept "but I need to watch what I eat" as an excuse, but they will take notice of "but I have a HM soon"! :D

Well done Miles. Good idea to give yourself a long lead in to give you ample time to PREPARE.

Don't panic, don't panic! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaghh. Awooga, awooga! Eeek

and breathe.................................... blowing into a paper bag here Miles. Are you nervous at all, at this stage, or is it just us?

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply tomisswobble

Oh yes, MissW, quite nervous! It may be over eight months away, but I'm still nervous; there's so much to do before then, but there's plenty of time in which to prepare, so no need to panic. Yet. Plus it's incentive to take things steady and not over-train and get injured! I did wake up earlier wondering what the hell I'd done!

February!!!! Is it run in snow shoes?? :)

I went to Brighton once in Spring - the wind off the Channel blew my expensive umbrella inside out!!

At least I should have a nice sea breeze, and possibly snow, to keep cool with! :D

Thanks, Drummond! :-) full training updates will, of course, be provided! Quite a number of rice cakes will need to be consumed too, I feel!

Yes! I do love that term too! :-) That's what I love about running: what previously seemed impossible, really isn't once fitness starts to build and one does start to wonder just what we're capable of. I'm really excited already! :-)

That really is something to aim for and the timing of the run will ensure you train hard right through the winter. My sister in law did the Brighton Marathon last year and said the course was really nice with not too many hills so hope you enjoy it too. Best of luck working up to it.

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply to

Thank you, Henpen! :-) Yeah, that's one of the reasons I chose it: it will be great for winter motivation and encouragement to take it easy at Christmas! :D That's good to know, thank you; I did think it would be fairly flat. It looks a good course. Really looking forward to it!

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate

LOL! You're on! :D I'll take some with me; I'll need it! I actually opted for the post-race sports massage too; I have a feeling I'll be needing it!

Brilliant, just brilliant! What a fab place to do your first HM. I say first because I strongly suspect there'll be others. Fingers crossed you have a mild winter in sunny Sheffield because with all that training to do, you don't want to be pounding the streets in wellies :) Good luck m'dear x

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply toAncientMum

Thank you, GazelleMum! :-) Yes, I thought that; it looks a fantastic place for my first HM; I wanted something a bit scenic and special. There will be others too; I have my eye on a few more next year! All this from randomly deciding to do C25K one day! I do hope the winter is mild as there's lots of training to be done and progress to be made! Thank you; very frequent training updates will follow, of course! :-) x

Good for you! I'm signed up for my first hm in Sept and the date seems to be galloping towards me! If all goes well on that, I may well be joining you at Brighton in Feb ( I'm joining in the Pheonix 10k there in July as part of my hm training)

Miles_Yonder profile image

Oh YEAH go for that M_Y!!! In beautiful Brighton too!

There's some dudey physio-type guy that writes loads of stuff about running on t'interweb from Brighton .... from Studio57 maybe? .... i stumbled upon him by accident one day.

What a great choice of place for your MHM ... seaside, gorgeous architecture, humming lively population ... i bet the atmosphere that weekend will be fanTAStic!!!

You'll be so ready by then. Can't wait to read in the papers about the 747 taking off from the West Pier next Feb!!!

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply toBoPeep9009

Thank you, BP! Ah, Studio 57! They do the pre/post race sports massage. I've opted for the post-race massage. I think I'll need it! Yes, I really wanted somewhere special and scenic for my first HM! I really can't wait; the atmosphere will be amazing! Yes, I'll be fully-fuelled and ready for take-off at the start-line! :-)

Good for you. You'll have a fab time!... And you can take your truck for all your supplies.. Or for a sneaky rest in half way round... Or to block the route and confuse the others... !! Happy training ... You might even win! X

Miles_Yonder profile image

Thank you, Jaqs! A lorry full of rice cakes (another book title! :D) may well be in order though even then I'm not sure I'd win! I'll be happy just to finish though! :-)

Have you gone stark raving bonkers old thing? Haha! Seriously though, well done on your reckless bravado. All you have to do now is put in the miles, Miles?! (See what I did there?).

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply todanzargo

Thank you, Mr Dan! I do wonder about my sanity with doing this, but there's time enough for training! I know full well I'll be stood there on the starting line thinking "what the hell am I doing?!" but sod it, why not?! More Miles indeed, good sir!

GO ON LAD! If anyone can do it - you can! :D

Yes, Spoonie, I agree, especially through winter and over Christmas! :-)

Dear Mr Yonder,

I signed up for the November Mo Run 10k based on your previous post promoting your application to it.

Please accept this post as my decline to enter a Half Marathon with you!

I do, however, wish you luck.

Kind Regards,

Ms Horror :)

AncientMum profile image
AncientMumGraduate in reply to

Wow FrockyHorror are you running in Leeds or are you doing the November Mo Run elsewhere? I signed up after M_Y mentioned it too, as it seemed a great cause (I lost my Dad to prostate cancer last year) and it also seemed a long way off, so not too scary. Would be great if there were lots of us from this forum there. :)

Like you, I won't be signing up for a half marathon any time soon! lol

in reply toAncientMum

Sadly not in Leeds but Milton Keynes! I'm actually in the West Midlands so it was a bit of a toss up which one to go for.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. I will use him as my inspiration when I'm feeling sorry myself when out training :)

I've managed to convince my Mum to do the 10k with me and my hubby and 10 year old son are doing the 5k. Now just need to grow a 'tache :D

AncientMum profile image
AncientMumGraduate in reply to

That is such a lovely thing to say FrockyHorror, about using my dad as your inspiration whilst training. He was a great believer in the kindness of strangers and you've just proved him right. :)

Hope you and your family have a wonderful time in Milton Keynes and all smash your PBs to smithereens! xx

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply to

Dearest Ms Frocky,

I'm delighted to hear you liked the look of the Mo-run and decided to sign-up; you may be in Milton Keynes but through the power of Club C25K, we'll be running together in spirit. I express disheartenment that you're politely declining the Half Marathon, but a chap understands and proffers his hearty regards and compliments for your consideration, however briefly, of the prospect.

Hold that moustache medal with pride!

Heartiest greetings of the evening,

Runningly yours,

Devourer of Peanutty Rice cakes.

"Nice breeze" ! Yeah right! "Stiff breeze" is what you meant to say. Mind those rice cakes! They'll be in the briny before you know it

Ah yes, I'm not sure they'll allow me across the border, with me being from the Northern Territories! I might have to apply for a Special Stay of Running in order to participate! :D

Good on you! It's a brave, but definitely not foolhardy decision. I think it will be an amazing and hopefully enjoyable challenge. Looking into my crystal ball I predict a sub 1h 45 time... no pressure now! ;-)

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply toTurboTortoise

I really shouldn't reply on my phone; the messages sometimes get jumbled up, for some reason! Anyway, tee hee! 1h 45 would be great! I actually selected the 1hr 45m - 2.00h time prediction on the application; I used a pace calculator ( runnersworld.com/race-train... ) and it came out as around that time, so your crystal ball could well be right! It is a huge step up but achievable, I think. :-)

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate

I hadn't, Kitty, but thank you for the idea. There's one of those budget gyms near me that's always open so I'll join there and treadmill if I need to. I might join anyway as I could do with a bit of resistance training to help tone and with my core fitness. :-)

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate

Cheers! :-) I'll give it my very best shot!

I am in awe of you! Of course you will absolutely blast it and in glorious Technicolor style! I was thinking of doing the Great South Run next year (10 Miles) and if I am still alive after that and my running is up to scratch then... no, who am I trying to kid, I think 10 miles will be pushing it for me! Well done my awesome chum, I am so proud to be able to say that I graduated with you... remember me when you're doing the Commonwealth Games ;)

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply toTreemouse

Thank youuuu Mousey! :-) You will be absolutely fine on the Great South Run! The Great series of runs do look, erm, great! I'm doing the Great Yorkshire Run in September but it's 10K, not ten miles. You'll be fine for the GSR and I predict you'll even be doing a HM before you know it!

And thank you; thank you most kindly, for your wonderful words! :-) And likewise, graduating with your fine self is an honour! Hmmmm, the Commonwealth Games, that would be something! :D
