Morning all. I'm not long in from my first run -again. Initially started the programme about 5 wks ago but illness struck at the end of the second week. So started again today - boy, it was tough. But feels good knowing Im back "on it"! I'm looking forward to going out tomorrow again.

Wee bit advice please. My ultimate aim is a 16k trail run next year (already signed up) but I'm starting running on roads to begin with. I can't afford to buy two pairs of trainers. What would people advise? I'm wearing Brooks just now but these are almost past it.

Thanks in advance. Have a good day folks.

If you do decide to hit the trail at some point, and you should as it gives your legs a bit of a softer surface to run on, then you'll need trail running shoes.

For the moment if you're just running on the road then get road running shoes. If you've been happy with your Brooks then go for those. If you can get yourself to a running shop you're laughing as they can check your feet properly and get you sorted. Lots of Brooks road running shoes on the market, I think the most cushioned Brooks shoe is the Transcend but folks on here like their Adrenaline and the Ghost. If you try loads on at the running shop then that's best

Well done on getting out there again. I notice you say you've just got back in from a run and looking forward to going out again tomorrow. Are you not taking the rest days? We are supposed to take a rest (non-running) day between each running day so that the muscles can recover and repair before the next run. The rest days are essential as not to take them puts you at risk of injury. Good luck with your next run and best wishes.

I've been happy with my Karrimor trail shoes, and OH has gone back to them. He bought others but was more comfortable in the Karrimor. They are comparatively cheap, but come from Sports Direct, which we were trying to boycott cos of their zero hour contracts!

Thanks folks. I think a trip to the big city might be in order to get a full gait analysis done. Had it done for my Brooks but that was for the Moonwalk, and I believe from an earlier post that we use different styles and muscles when walking or running. I'll see what they recommend.

Fitmo - I absolutely appreciate your advice about rest days. Ordinarily I would go for alternate days but unfortunately my personal slave driver, oops, sorry, personal TRAINER had limited availabiliy this week. To ensure I got the first 2 days in this was the only way to do it this week, otherwise it would have been next week. My confidence in my abilities is practically zero and knowing she is coming makes me do it. And, we go at 6a.m so I cant spend any time talking myself out of it!! As a confirmed snooze-monster that's a massive achievement in itself as I loooooove my bed!! The next test will be if I go out myself on Thur or Fri (as she is not able to come) .............
