I don't know , went for a run Boxing Day , at the start it was slightly sore , did 6k & it was hurting , took ibrufen it was fine even went out with dog on a really long walk straight after . Thurs set off on another run 5k it hurt slightly at start but wore off , after though it hurt took tablets & it eased off , went today & it really hurt couldn't walk . Think I've overdone my distances been doing 6.5 some days , I've learned my lesson , going to increase distance gradually .

i can totally relate to this I am at the moment having to force myself not to go out and run for a couple of weeks as I have pushed too far too soon and am now suffering with recurring pain in my left thigh. I will take a couple of weeks and then go again slowly and build up at the recommended amount of 10% a week. I suppose it's a hard lesson to learn for all us runners. and as for being too old we have a gentleman in his mid seventies that runs the park run, amazing and inspirational :)

Why do we do it ! I'm going to be really disciplined when I get back out there , it's just not worth it . Hope you won't be long before your fully recovered . Just console yourself that at least it's not spring & lovely running weather .

Not good! How frustrating, as well as physically difficult. I really need to heed these warnings not to get over enthusiastic too soon but I can see it being so tempting when you are doing well and loving the running.

Yes be carefull , one day I ran & didn't realise I'd done 6.5 k till I looked at my watch . Your only supposed to increase by 10% each week ! I'd only just started getting to 5k then . Just take notice , I've learned my lesson now .

Oh Rockette no! Poor you. How frustrating. Not being able to rest it at work is really unfortunate. I am sorry to hear that. You need to do as your told and just take it easy. There's plenty of time when you're fit to get out there. I've been running injured too and come a cropper. When will we learn? Get well soon love. X

It happened to me and I know it happens to a lot of people, soon after they graduate, they push too hard and suffer the consequences. Remember, the superhero status only arrives several years after graduation, so base your running on some kind of sensible progressive plan, even if you adapt it to your needs. Take it easy Rockette and good luck.

Oh crikey! So sorry you hurt your ankle as well!! I hurt mine 8 days ago and it's still not right. I think you might have to accept a couple of weeks down time Rockette.

Rockette in reply to misswobble

Yes I'm going to NYC end of next month , don't want to make it worse for all the walking we do there

Rockette profile image
Rockette in reply to IannodaTruffe

I have learned my lesson , I'm def taking it slowly from now .

misswobble profile image

Yes, me too! I have a run planned for Thursday with the local running group I joined but I think I won't be able to make it. My ankle is still swollen and painful and I hurt mine 8 days ago. It's really frustrating especially when the sun's out! Grrrrrrrrrrrr I hope yours heals quick! I'm 56 and I suspect slower to heal than young uns

Sorry to hear your still suffering . Yes I'm 55 , & all I'm getting from anti running friends & family is ... See I told you so .... Your too old for that game ... Pack it in .... Blah blah blah that's getting to me more than anything .

Yes my doc said he thinks I've been doing too much to soon , I've calculated that I've done 48 k since I graduated end of November . That doesn't include short runs to & from work , he said 10% increase in distance per wk . I'd only just started getting to 5k & did 6.5 one run . Ok I didn't realise I'd done it but I went & did 6k not long after that couple times more . But never mind , damage done now , I've learned from it & you live& learn lol . Happy safe running .

Yes iannodatruffle I'm learning the hard way , how long where you out of action ? Was yours a sprain ?

I just tried too hard at my first parkrun and had about ten days out with various aches and pains that needed some respect. In the scheme of things, a few days out and a lesson learned, is not too much to worry about, but can be very frustrating, I know. Don't listen to those who say you are too old. You know what running gives you and they don't. We may feel as if we are twenty again, but our bodies have to be treated gently. Good luck.

Oh, Rockette, so sorry to hear. Lots of very sensible advice here. Is there anyway you can keep your fitness ticking over on a static bike or something? Don't do anything to inflame that ankle more though. Sprains need to be taken seriously because it is soft tissue damage. Sounds like you have access to good advice but the hard bit will be taking it!

Rockette profile image
Rockette in reply to deb54

I know , but I'm going to have to take it . It's not that bad a sprain I don't think it's not that swollen , hasn't been from start and I'm walking a lot better today . Hope I'm right .

Sorry to hear this, but at least you've caught it fairly early and got good advice. It'll be frustrating but it needs to rest and recover (not least for all the NYC walking!). Take care.

Oh poor you. I am so sorry to hear that you have a sprain. I really hope you make a full recovery quickly. Do take it easy though. I think your story has reminded me ( and a few others by the sounds of it) to take my time with things and not push too hard. I definitely don't think we are too old for starting running( ( I am 56) and I have heard that from folk too (you will ruin your knees etc etc) but I do think we have to treat our bodies gently and with care. Not that I am good at doing that but I am learning. Enjoy NYC when you get there.

Ouch...I feel for you. I went from averaging 4.5 to 5K last month then went straight out and did a 6.2K....came home with a big old smug grin on my face which rapidly disappeared when my left knee started playing up. I've since had to drop back to 3K x 3 times a week to avoid a repeat of what was a very stiff and achey knee, as anything much over that and the run turns into a weird sort of ' hobblejog' and I limp back in shame :(

If you are near a Lidl they have fitness stuff from 2Jan which includes Aircon support braces for ankles, knees etc ....I wonder if an ankle support would be good for you? As its only £2.99 for the ankle one it's not much of an outlay .

I bought the knee one today ( the fitness offer started earlier here in France) for 4.99 euros and it seems well made and worth the money .

Take care of your ankle.....as far as work allows.Hope you will be back to full fitness and running very soon :)

Thanks carolecal, I will get that ankle support . I know what you mean about the hobblejog , that's what I was doing Sunday lol . I could kick myself really for going Sunday , my ankle wasn't 100% I just thought it would wear off on the run like all my other niggles . Hope your knees keep being good for you & happy running

I am sorry that you are going through with this pain but don't worry you will get well soon! I would advise you to:

1- Don't do exercise that can cause pain.

2- Lift up your ankle above the level of your heart.

3- Use a cold pack or ice for about 15-20 mins 3 to 5 times a day to preclude pain.

4- Take ibuprofen or Tylenol.

These tips really helped me when I have sprained my ankle.
