I've stepped up to running longer distances for several weeks now...
I did my first 10K two days ago and ran a pb in the local Parkrun today (I'm slow but getting a little faster each time lol!) but I find after running for nearly an hour I develop pain in my right foot at the base of my middle toes, just where they join the ball of the foot and it's quite painful. This has happened 3 times now and I wondered if anyone had any idea what it was or how to 'cure' it as I want to continue running - maybe even do a half marathon sometime soon? I don't think I can go much beyond 10K if this keeps happening to me, so any ideas anyone, please?

Really well done on extending and completing the distances. I too am looking to bring my time down on 5k and I am building up to 10k.
On the foot front - I have no advice I am afraid- I have joint and a particular problem with a dropped arch on left foot. I went to see a specialist sports podiatrist - he have me all sorts of of information - including recommending new shoes and taking ibuprofen to reduce inflammation .
My advice go to your local running shop and see if they advice a sports podiatrist.
Thanks - I am going to go back to the running shop where I got my shoes a few weeks back and ask their advice but I just wondered if anyone had had this problem before. It's ironic because I was running in my ordinary walking shoes for several months before I got proper running shoes and was ticked off by the assistant for that, yet I've only had feet issues wearing my new shoes! In truth though, it's probably just because I'm running for a lot longer! Lol. 5K is no problem for my feet, but 8+K is!
Good luck with your 10K and reducing your time for 5K! I've found the 5K+ podcasts on stamina and speed helpful for both of these. I generally do 2 speed runs back to back and when I want to run for a long-ish time I do 2 stamina runs back to back, which is hard! - I did my 10K using this because it helps me to keep my pace steady.
The pain is actually in the base of my toes, rather than the ball of my foot but it could still be this, I guess. I am going to the sports shop but maybe a visit to the doctor is in order, just to rule this out or find out the cause of the pain? I can run with it - I ran 20 minutes after the pain started when I did my 10K run - but I wouldn't want to keep repeating that because it might make matters worse (and the pain doesn't do much for how I feel when I run!).
My toes are just a little bit sore now after running yesterday but I'll have an extra rest day tomorrow...
You're welcome. Maybe not this, and more likely overuse. I think the running shop is a good plan and if it doesn't improve with rest and pain relief yep see your Doc. If you're anything like me a rest from running drove me crazy, nothing for 6 weeks but it was worth it so you have my sympathy
Thanks - I hope it doesn't come to stopping running - that'll drive me crazy lol! I might try and restrict myself to 5 or 6K for all my runs this week and see how it goes. I don't need pain relief because it only comes on during running and then once I stop, it dissipates although I have noticed the niggle is still with me today, a day later, when usually it goes away after a couple of hours, but it's not too bad. It might just be overuse - I hope!
