An unwelcome 'trip' to a and e.

Was having a lovely run in the hills yesterday, doing B210k week 3 with Samantha. Was within 10 meters of the trig point at the top feeling very exilerated, then disaster. I tripped on a rotten, blasted stone. Fell flat down on the ground. I knew instantly something was wrong. Took my time and sat on the ground for a while to assess the damage. My dog was very excited, she thought it was a game....alas no. My arm was definitely weird. Got up and clutching my arm to my body I gently jogged/walked back to the car, trying to persuade myself it wasn't that bad.

Had to drive home, about 10 minutes, just managing to change gear despite lots of pain. Lots of bad language. My neighbour kindly took me to a and e where the long wait gave us a chance to have a good chat about subjects ranging from septic tanks to two broken noses she'd had in the course of doing her job (care work).

Had three x-rays and was eventually told by the kind nurse that I had a fracture near my elbow and a sprained wrist. The good news? Apparently I have 'young bones', so it should heal quickly. And just a sling, no plaster thank goodness.

So I'm very fed up and feeling very stupid. I guess I was focusing on the trig point and forgot to check the ground and pick my feet up. Aagh!

No driving, no swimming and no running. Lots of walking instead I guess. Any other ideas welcome.

Awwwww I am so sorry to read your blog, what a shame, hope the pain soon settles down. Did they say how long you will be in a sling for? You did well to drive yourself home after that. Take care, especially when you are out walking the dog, you don't want to fall again.

Thanks oldgirl. Two to three weeks was mentioned, although this doesn't seem very long to me. I broke a toe once and it took months to get better. I've been resting all day but need to get out for a walk as I feel like I'm going to seize up completely - and the dog is looking very hopeful!! It's extremely windy too so may ask if my lovely neighbour wants to come too.

Oh no! You poor thing. Hope you recover really quickly. Sounds promising have "young bones". X

Thanks Pam. Not sure exactly what young bones means!

Poor you. I broke my wrist last year so I know how you feel. Chin up and lots of walking. You'll be up and running again in about six weeks. The pavements aren't going anywhere. they'll be waiting for you. And so will I, your running partner!

Hi Delia. How did you break your wrist? Not a fall whilst running I hope?

Six weeks, gosh. I really hope it's not that long. I've just been out for a slow hours walk with the dog which was fine, and think my aim will be to do my own version of 5 x 50, ie something every day for at least 30 minutes until I can run again. Trouble is, walking may be the only activity! If I don't do something though I know it will affect my mood. Running seems to have had such a therapeutic effect!

Oh, petal, that's really frustrating. Driving with a broken arm though - goodness! :O

Keeping up doing some sort of activity every day sounds a very good idea while you can't run - then it'll be so much easier to get back to the running when you can. Maybe the break was a 'greenstick' one, rather than a complete snap - perhaps they heal faster, especially with 'young bones'? I love the 'young bones' phrase!

All the best - you'll be back! :)

Thanks greenlegs. I was getting so into the running, really enjoying the freedom etc.

I'll just have to blog about my walks instead!!

Sue, you were the one who first told me I could do this, and now I can I have no intention of giving up! I'll try and enjoy the walking in the meantime!

That's the spirit! You will be fine when you are back to running though maybe a bit wobbly at first. When I fell it did knock my confidence for a few runs though I didn't have anything as bad as you.... keep up the walking though to keep the fitness levels up and remember, running is walking, only faster!! ;)
