I do not know how common the sore throat is before an infection, but one thing that is very important. Once you know the signs leading up to a chest infection, it is VERY important to begin treatment as soon as possible. Chest infections can lead to severe exacerbations (also called flare-ups). Severe exacerbations are typically when lung function declines rapidly and you may not get back to your lung function that you were prior to the exacerbation.

In other words- take action right away when you feel something coming on so that you can mitigate/prevent any severe symptoms or infections.

Unfortunately, a many physicians do not communicate this to their patients. It is one of the most important aspects of successfully managing severe COPD (a.k.a. Gold Stage 3 or 4). It is also important for mild or moderate COPD, but it is most important for maintaining lung function in severe or very severe COPD.

I hope this helps...

Good morning Trevor 6. I too have severe copd and luckily I haven't had a chest infection yet. But I used to suffer with very sore throats quite often. I never had my tonsils out as a child and wondered if that was the problem. I used to find plenty of hot drinks of water and lemon helped me. The worst part was overnight when your throat is all dried up. Hope you feel better soon. Brian
