COLD AIR

I was diagnosing with emphysema in June. I’m finding the cold air agitating my lungs and the effects can last all day. Has anyone else had a similar experience. Thanks in advance

Hi I’ve had emphysema for nearly 30 years and I find the weather is one of the worst things to affect my breathing. Not just cold but wind, humidity, heat, wet etc. I have come to this conclusion as at times there is nothing else to explain the problem with my breathing being poor. I’ve come to the conclusion I just have to live with this. Hope this helps Barbs x

Hi Barbs47, thanks for your response. I’ve come to the same conclusion, more so for the cold and the wind. Initially I wasn’t sure if it was a flare up. I’m still on a learning curve. Thanks again

What I find is that the cold air tends to constrict the airways...and often quite quickly! I live in Wisconsin, and the Winter air is difficult to handle at times. Try wearing a gaiter or a scarf over your mouth and nose. Hope this helps!

Hi, I find that’s what happens to me. I was using a scarf but have changed to a gaiter recently. Definitely helps, but I realise I’ve to always keep it up to avoid any respiratory diffs. Thanks for the input

What is a gaitor? 🇬🇧

A gaiter is like a leg warmer for the face!gq.com/story/the-best-neck-...

I agree with barbs47 with the addition of air pollution and pollen count, both are monitored and can be checked along with weather forecast apps.

Unfortunately the weather affects our breathing. I can handle hot and humid (so much for moving down south), but the cold also takes its toll. I live in Western New York. I cover my face loosely with a scarf when I have to venture out in the cold. I do my best to keep cold winds off my face.

Hi Katherine, the cold air/wind definitely is my Achilles heel. I’d love to move to a warmer climate, maybe when I retire lol in 18 years. The gaiter definitely help. Take care

I used to dream about moving to a warmer climate, but this past summer we had some hot and humid days. Those days were bad for me. I hate the cold weather, but I can stay inside in winter and cover my nose and mouth when I have to go outside. I don't have that option in the summer. So looks like I am stuck here

Definitely a challenge dealing with the various seasons. I doubt there’s ever a perfect climate.. take care and be safe
