'Something detected' on grandads CT scan....

Grandad is 86 and his iron levels have been dropping rapidly. He had a CT scan the other week and was called in to speak to a consultant at the hospital today. A Mcmillan cancer nurse was also there.

He was told that there was something on the right hand side of his colon but they don't know what. So they said they will have to re do the CT scan and may also need a blood transfusion.

Is this a common thing to happen? I thought CT scans were pretty accurate ?

Hi Fenella34,

Well, the CT found something on the right side of the colon but I'm not sure why another CT is needed? I would think a colonoscopy would be in order, but maybe it's on the outside of the colon and during the new CT scan, he would be positioned differently to get a better look? I would think knowing it's there would show a need for a biopsy.🤔

Often, the CT is used for the biopsy procedure in determining location and surrounding areas where they want to go. Maybe it's near other things they want to be careful or don't want to mess with at all.

I know in my case, when I was qualifying for my clinical trial, they wanted to get a biopsy of the tumor. The tumor was in an area that was very delicate and just getting to it physically could have caused more issues. It was decided the location risk wasn't worth it and they could use some tissue they took out of me during my partial colectomy.
