FIT test

Hello advice needed please. I've had blood from my bottom for the past few months. It's always been bright red. But the other day I had a lot of blood and mucus, so I went to the GP who said I needed a FIT test. It's now come back, positive and potentially abnormal. HB 17.2 ug. I now have an appointment on Monday with the GP. But when I took the poo sample I couldn't see any blood in or on the poo, and there was nothing on the tissue when I wiped myself. Any advice or questions I need to ask my GP please?

Hi gaynorwishes,

Thank you for posting on Colon Cancer Connected. I hate to hear you have these symptoms going on, but I think you're on a good path to getting the answers you need. Sometimes blood in the stool isn't always recognizable. It can be pretty obvious and then it can't be. That's why it's important to take the FIT test. The fact you had a positive FIT test shouldn't be surprising as you have observed blood and mucus in the stool. At that point, the FIT test was probably standard procedure for the GP to take. So, getting answers for a positive fit test is exactly what you need to be doing.

I also see that you're having to deal with endometriosis and I'm not sure if that could be playing a role in these results. It would be interesting to hear what the GP has to say about that. Also, unless a physical exam makes it pretty obvious, I would think a colonoscopy would need to be performed to find out the actual source of the blood. The colonoscopy is the best way to get those answers.

I would also write down any other symptoms you've been experiencing. Doing that we'll make sure you cover those with your GP when you meet Monday. You didn't mention any abdominal pain occurring which is good. It's also good to know if there's any family history of certain disease that may be in play as well. Your GP should be made aware of that.

We do wish you the very best in finding out what's going on. I think you're doing everything you need to be doing to get these answers. I would expect the colonoscopy is in your near future🤔. Please let us know what your GP has to say and what your next steps are going to be. It is that type of information like that can be helpful to others on this site.

Thank you,

~Tom, GCCA Survivor - Colon Cancer Connected Site Administrator.

Hi I've just been to see the GP and because it's come back positive, she has referred me on a 2 week cancer pathway, the hospital is going to contact me before the 8th March

Hi, normally with a high FIT you are put on a 2 week pathway which is a colonoscopy. Just to discover the reason for the blood. This could be a range of things. Mine was 49.ug. I had polyps removed and have diverticulosis. Tom has as usual written down all the things to ask your GP. Please do ask for the colonoscopy. Good luck.

That’s a good thing. You will know for sure what is going on. Just make sure you take all the prep. Then they will see everything, and you will not have to go back. Don’t worry too much my FIT test was higher than yours.
