As you note, it's basically another liver function test and it is considered to have some advantages over the established ALP, ALT and AST tests. Adding it improves the picture of how well your liver is coping with what you and your doctors are throwing at it. My lab began including it in its standard metabolic panel of tests last year, so I expect other labs will be doing the same as they replace lab test equipment.
Robert how often do you have bloods done ? Because I am on IVIG mine are done monthly in hospital and GGT is one of my regular tests done. Mine have been creeping up ( I do have a couple of glasses of wine ) and I discussed with my CNS who was only concerned if mine suddenly shot up. She did ask if I had been taking any new vitamin supplements recently.
Robert I suggest emailing your CNS and mention your concerns and ask her to look at your trends. When mine was checked it goes up and down and I was told not to worry.
