Travel insurance

I want to travel widely and am having trouble getting travel insurance. They will cover me for my heart condition but not CLL. Any ideas?

Usual problem because of the C word.

You’ve just got to sit down at the computer and trawl through all the medical websites, answering every questionnaire again and again. You can start with a comparison site to save time but they are selective for the big companies. In the UK if you’ve been in the civil service , teachers even council employed jobs you can join the civil service travel scheme. They cover medical conditions without questions. A membership fee plus a travel insurance fee. Perhaps someone on here has achieved this!

I haven’t used that scheme. Civil Service Insurance Society CSIS

Happy browsing☹️

Thanks, should have been in the Civil Service!

Yes, many jobs/professions listed. A wasted 10 mins or success.

Certainly worth a look, I worked in NHS and that’s included. Also lots of other perks too.

Gosh --didn't realise you get insurance having worked for the NHS I have an NHS pension. How do I go about getting insurance through them? And the other perks?

The insurance isn’t via NHS but if you worked for NHS you are eligible to join the Civil Service Sporting Club. There’s a monthly subscription of around £5 which gets you the perks such as free entry to English Heritage sites for 2 adults and children, reduced cinema tickets, various cash back schemes, and most importantly you can then purchase their travel insurance for which you do not have to declare medical conditions, just must be deemed fit to travel. Obviously if you are waiting for test results for undiagnosed condition then that wouldn’t be covered as with any other policy. I more than get my membership fees back on all the offers each year.

We have the same issue in Canada but I suspect if you look hard enough, you will find a carrier, albeit with unreasonably high premiums. Insurance companies are not in the business of losing money.

Another less desirable alternative is to “self-insure” and holiday only in countries where the cost of medical care is “manageable” should you end up with COVID. In the case of Canadians, this alternative would likely exclude travel to the US or in fact most Western Hemisphere countries.

For a number of my fellow Canadian cllers, the best alternative may be the “staycation” - holiday in our own country, albeit cautiously, and not have to worry about health care in the event COVID rears its ugly head

My husband has just insured with AllClear - approx £330 for annual multi-trip cover in Europe. He has Atrial Fibrillation and CLL

That sounds promising, many thanks, I will give it a try

If you your parents or parents in law have ever been in the services the Service Pensions Society will insure you as long as your travel isn't against medical or government orders.. No questions asked.. Up until Covid I did this with no problems and I'm over 70 too

I recently got insurance from coverforyou.com and it was pretty cheap too. I have a heart condition and CLL. Hope you manage to get it sorted soon.

in reply to Bbk1974

THANK YOU. That sounds the most promising so far.

We required worldwide cover and eventually settled for Staysure. This company has been referred to many times on this site.

Hope you find a suitable policy.

A real major medical plan in the US will not cover a person with a pre existing such as CLL. If you find one that is seemingly ignoring pre existing, it will not be a major medical; instead, it will be one of those cash indemnity things that are near worthless.

When I have a chance, I'll look into something that might be real and work. If you message me privately, it will remind me to do this for you.

Here’s a post listing travel insurance companies I posted quite a while ago. All known to cover pre-existing conditions;

my wife and i, and friends, have relied on insuremytrip.com for a decade to find travel insurance. it is a comparison site with lots of info about what type of coverage, etc. Their recommendations have covered my CLL and other issues no matter where i'm going--i've traveled to Tanzania, Peru, China, Tibet, etc. Had to file claims a few times and no problems, there, either. . note that cost may hit 10% of the cost of your trip. insuremytrip.com/
