As a seventy one year old in watch and wait my husband and I had a annual worldwide policy including USA for £950 approx. In May last year We were looking to update our details as required if circumstances change, to travel to turkey in April, I am now on O+V treatment starting September 22. Basically the computer said ‘no’. Declined. End of. No empathy or help From the operative. I had no opportunity to question further or explain. A further conversation after I had recovered (totally distraught at thought of not being able to travel again) with another representative was much more positive but nonetheless had the same outcome. He suggested once treatment over it maybe possible to insure again or use the option of no medical insurance being made and therefore no medical cover for trips. Converting to single trip policy was no different a partial refund was given for remaining portion and nothing further could be done

Have others been in this situation. Any help please.

Jude

I was able to find single trip coverage in the US for overseas travel with a preexisting conditions rider from Allianz. Cost was 4% of trip value.

Some of the premium credit card providers are now offering overseas travel insurance for those over 65, I expect with a rider for pre-existing conditions. In Canada, HSBC will offer 21 day coverage for those 65 and over starting February 1, as I understand it. I haven’t seen the small print yet so here’s hoping…..

We got an annual European policy from All Clear without any problems. They were more interested in my husband's blood pressure than my CLL. I am 70 and my husband is 71. It would have been another £800 for Worldwide cover and extra for cruise cover. We decided to stay in Europe for this year at least due to worry about Covid. Do give them a call.

In our experience it is when you are on treatment that causes the insurers the problem. I wrote about this a few years ago and some of the replies may be useful to you healthunlocked.com/cllsuppo...

In the end we did get insurance for the one week trip to Italy but it was very expensive. We travelled last year as well (Israel and Croatia) between treatments but I dread to think what will happen next time as my husband has since had a richters transformation!

Good luck - I really hope you manage to get there.

do how does this pan out for insurance if you elect (or lucky to get) the treatment types which are ‘a pill for life’?

I am really not sure. We always enjoyed travelling but my husbands 2 year treatment on venetoclax coincided with covid and lockdowns so we couldn’t go anyway.

I do think the insurers need to rethink their approach in the light of more recent treatments.

I had exactly this experience Jude. I am on O+V and all insurers gave me a NO. I spoke with one representative who was very helpful but said once I put down on the application that I was in treatment all underwriters would reject me. I did get one quote for £10,000!! I was wanting to go to the USA to visit family. However I did get a single trip policy from SAGA to Italy. Now that I am nearing the end of the treatment I am able to get insurance for the USA after treatment completion.

Don't you find it too risky traveling being your age and under treatment right now? I'd rather not travel than risk dying somewhere even though well insured.
