My Port keeps clogging.

My port has been clogging... they used that Activace (for TIAs) to unclog it... but read that can be risky. Should be saline or is heparin better?

I have had my port for about two years now and when I get monthly IVIG's they flush it with Heparin after each use. Last time I had a blood test they couldn't get blood to flow from it so they had me turn my head and cough. That did the trick and blood flowed once more.

Note: the following linked article says to not try any cleaning or changing of tubing without the specific training by your RN. but to answer question of which solution to use it looks like both are suggested.. Of course, your DR/RN will be the one to ask, though.

When should I flush my port?

Flush your port with saline (salt water) before, after, and between medicines and treatments. Flush your port with heparin (a blood thinner) between each port use. Your port also needs to be flushed with heparin every 4 weeks when it is not being used regularly. You will use a syringe to push a small amount of saline or heparin into the port and catheter. Flush your port to keep the catheter from getting blocked and to prevent medicines from mixing in the tubing.

I’ve had a power port for 4 years. I have it flushed and blood drawn every month. Make sure the flush with 2 saline and then the heparin. I’ve only had problems about 2 times.
