Here is a link to the recommendations from ACIP that shows the vaccines that are not recommended for immune compromised individuals. You may need to look on Table 2 for the specific column for immune compromised.

annals.org/aim/fullarticle/...

After a little more research I learned that the common Tdap shot covers diphtheria and tetanus and is safe for us.

But there are two types of typhoid treatments, see

cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/vi...

And note that we immune compromised should only get the inactivated version.

Some people should not get typhoid vaccine or should wait.

Inactivated typhoid vaccine (shot)

-

Should not be given to children younger than 2 years of age.

Anyone who has had a severe reaction to a previous dose of this vaccine should not get another dose.

Anyone who has a severe allergy to any component of this vaccine should not get it. Tell your doctor if you have any severe allergies.

Anyone who is moderately or severely ill at the time the shot is scheduled should usually wait until they recover before getting the vaccine.

-+++++++++++++++++++++

Live typhoid vaccine (oral)

Should not be given to children younger than 6 years of age.

Anyone who has had a severe reaction to a previous dose of this vaccine should not get another dose.

Anyone who has a severe allergy to any component of this vaccine should not get it. Tell your doctor if you have any severe allergies.

Anyone who is moderately or severely ill at the time the vaccine is scheduled should usually wait until they recover before getting it. Tell your doctor if you have an illness involving vomiting or diarrhea.

Anyone whose immune system is weakened should not get this vaccine. They should get the typhoid shot instead. This includes anyone who:

has HIV/AIDS or another disease that affects the immune system,

is being treated with drugs that affect the immune system, such as steroids for 2 weeks or longer,

has any kind of cancer,

is taking cancer treatment with radiation or drugs.

Oral typhoid vaccine should not be given until at least 3 days after taking antibiotics.

Ask your doctor for more information.

Just enjoy. On W&W I did everything. Not sure about shots. I never needed them for places I visited. Check with your hematologist. 💕

As long as they’re not live vaccines, there shouldn’t be any issues. I’ve been to Africa a dozen times since diagnosis; I’ve had blood tests done in Arusha, Stone Town and Johannesburg on some of my trips so my specialist could keep an eye on me. I’m headed to Kenya in November. The only vaccination you won’t be able to have is for yellow fever. I suggest you get a letter from your specialist advising that you are unable to have that vaccination.

I've always worried about yellow fever vaccine ... I travel across Africa and Asia (and am not going to let CLL change that - I hope :-)) but my yellow fever vaccination certificate runs out this year. Does a letter really cut it with immigration officials in Africa or India?

I was advised that it did. I also assumed that the vaccine provided lifelong protection. I had the vaccine in 1970 but I can’t prove it now.

Get the killed vaccines and do what you can to avoid insect bites. I went to Kenya and it was amazing with no medical issues at all. Stay strong, Brian Koffman CLLSociety.org
