I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a massage therapy organisation in the greater Manchester (UK) area?

I was given a voucher by my partner for The Manchester Therapy Center for a 90min Birthday massage, unfortunately when I filled in the obligatory medical history form and informed them that my cancer was CLL they declined to redeem the voucher, claiming they didn't have staff trained to deal with it as it involved "the lymph system".

I was obviously, in turn, embarresed / annoyed / dismayed by this.

We have obtained a full refund and I am casting about for an alternative venue.

When I asked my consultant if I could have a massage he said yes, although I didn’t have much in the way of swollen lymph nodes (still don’t). Good luck with finding someone, as I love a decent massage, so relaxing. (I’m miles away so can’t help you I’m afraid).

I thought it wouldn't be a bother either. I did explain my only symptoms were elevated WBC and some night sweats. Thanks for the good wishes, I'll let you know how I get on.

Ask your doctor. There are therapists who are trained to help cancer patients.

That is an idea, I think I'll contact my hæmatologist early next week, I suppose I didn't think of it myself as it seems a "trivial" thing to bother them with.

Cheers.

I’ve been a massage therapist since 1975 and a Naprapath since 1997. I have no problem getting a massage. A basic Swedish Massage does nothing to hurt the body. Because CLL is in the blood and bone marrow there is nothing that is going to make it spread.

So you've got a foot in both camps, are you still practicing?

Yes I am still practicing. I have to spread my patients out a bit but I still see 15-20 patients a week.

Where are you based?

Any chance of an addition to your books?

A massage does me the world of good. I go to our excellent local small cancer care centre (charity run). I live in a very rural area so we are very lucky to have it. All complimentary treatments are not charged for so those who can pay do so by putting money in a box (gift aid if wished). There is no set fee. This is also available to carers and family. They also do courses on mindfulness, tai chi and many many more. Obviously, it relies heavily on fund raising and grants. If I ever retire I would love to be able to go more. At the moment it’s confined to school holidays. Hope you get sorted, it will be so beneficial.
