CLL Specialist

Can someone give me the name of a CLL specialist in San Diego, CA? I will visiting January through March. I thought it might be an opportunity for a second opinion.

I believe Dr Kipps is there. He’d be my first choice anywhere.

Dr Rosen is at City of Hope in Duarte, CA. He is a highly regarded CLL specialist who previously was in charge of (built up) the comprehensive cancer center (NIH Designation for centers of excellence in multiple cancers) at Northwestern in Chicago. We lost out when he relocated. But Dr Kipps is Ok too I guess (yes he’s highly regarded as well). I don’t know if Dr Rosen is still practicing but I suspect he is.

Dr. Thomas Kipps, Dr. Michael Choi and Dr. Juanario Castro all work together sat UCSD. It may be hard to get in with Kipps - I saw Choi and liked him very much. Dr. Stephen Rosen is still at City of Hope in Duarte - but also tougt to get an appointment. He works with Dr. Tanya Siddiqqi who I also saw, and she is very good and works in tandem with Dr. Rosen. I am going to Dr. Choi and not only is he qualified, direct and caring.....he is genuinely a nice doctor. He is my first choice and works side by side with Dr. Kipps. He is also a friend of Dr. Siddiqqi at City of Hope who I saw before. Dr. Choi is my first choice. Honestly, I'm thankful we have a choice. *His staff was also wonderful

Seeing Dr. Choi at UCSD Moores Cancer Center. Jennifer Galvan is the scheduler 858.822.6100. UCSD Moores Cancer Center staff and organization is very good. Should you get an appointment, be at UCSD Moores Cancer Center one hour at the center since you will need your blood taken in the Lab. The Lab will need to test and get your workup onto the computer for Dr. Choi to access during your appt.

A good CLL specialist appointment can be 4 to 6 months out, so make it ASAP because your stated time frame of January to March can be problematic in this regard. Also ask to be placed on a first available appointment waitlist. I got in in only 2 months because of someone's cancellation.

UCSD is one of the best places in the country for CLL speciallty!! I go there. Dr. Kipps, Choi and Castro are all good. Call Jose Lopez at 858-822-0863 to get things going ahead of time. You need to have your medical records transfered.

For San Diego, definitely Kipps, Choi, and Castro. They consult with each other if there are questions, so you get a three for one.

The next closest specialists would be Susan O'Brien (formerly at MD Anderson) and Lauren Pinter Brown (my doctor of many years, until she relocated) at the Irvine Medical Center. The City of Hope doctors are great, but it would be a bit of a trek if San Diego will be your home base.
