Off topic Friday: Autumn Glade

I painted this not as an evocation of autumn, but as an elegy for a year with a summer-less summer. Having said that, I had tremendous fun painting it.

The picture is small, just 7" by 5". It comes partly from playing with different techniques that are new to me, and so is mixed media, and a little bit from my imagination. It is no real place, so I cannot take you there to say, 'Look see, this is what it's like in real life.'

So, what did I do? I used some gesso that I coloured with watercolour paint, some watercolour paint on its own, and (a nice one this) some fibres from burlap that I laid onto the page and then immersed in acrylic ink. When the ink was nearly dry, I removed the fibres and washed the painting under a running tap, washing away the areas that had not yet dried.

The results from all this are highly unpredictable, but seem to be filled with so much beauty that it aches.

I hope you like my autumn glade. Maybe I will, after all, see you there one day. 😀

I like that. We need to be able to engage the subdominant right side of our brains, which thinks in terms of patterns and colours, rather than the logic-ruled left side. It has been a struggle for me, but I am finally managing to paint using my right hand side. I like to think that that makes my paintings more thought provoking -- stuff that you would pause in front of if you saw it in a gallery and say, "Hang on a minute. . . . " I am nowhere in the same league, but is that not what happens when we see something by one of the great masters?

It’s also what we do if we happen on something that is generally classed as a ‘doodle’ but for the observer it can be something special? I also feel that the emotional capital spent on perception affects what we see?
