spider nevi?

Hello

I have recently been pregnant and I am now breastfeeding my third child. I used to drink too much alcohol but I don't anymore. For some time now I have had a rash, in the face mostly. is it a spider nevi? can't see a central point but small veins. am of course worried that my past sins may have damaged my liver. have slightly elevated liver enzymes, platelets are normal. not looking for medical advice, just support in my anxiety. did an mre x-ray 2 years ago which showed nothing. Nor did the ultrasound and CT scan show anything two years ago. can fibrosis/cirrhosis develop in these years?

You would have expected any potential liver issues would have been picked up during your various tests during pregnancy. If in doubt get a few simple tests at GP's but don't let this become health anxiety which will take over and spoil your life with your little ones.

it is extra difficult when I seem to have symptoms that could be liver related.

alt/ast slightly above average

discomfort on the right side of the stomach (had surgery to remove the gallbladder)

spider veins (especially after a glass of wine)

diabetes type 2 (not overweight and no family history, eats healthy)

swollen stomach after the smallest food.

Small thread/spider veins on your face are more likely to be just that - spider veins or thread veins which arn't liver related and commonly occur due to hormone changes and seeing as you have not long gone through pregnancy this is more likely to be what you have.

Shouldn't get them confused with

Spider naevi which can (but not always) be liver related. They generally fan out from a central dot (body of spider) and spread out (like legs). More commonly located on the back torso and shoulders.

What tests are you thinking of? where I live only ultrasounds are done. I also had to check protein and blood in urine

as well as liver enzymes due to previous havanade poisoning.

Blood tests would reveal if there were any liver issue.

I think it's far more likely that a rash on your face is due to other reasons, perhaps something like rosacea, which can also cause a flush after a glass of wine. It's easy to dwell on damage we might have done in the past and start spotting all sorts of things that could be symptoms, but given you had some thorough investigations 2 years ago which were all fine, I would say it's very unlikely you've gone from that point to irreversible damage. Please enjoy your bubba and a healthy lifestyle, and don't let anxiety consume you, it lies you know 🙂. For peace of mind, you could ask the gp to run some blood tests, don't be afraid to seek support for anxiety too if you need to. X

Thank you so much for writing, what you are saying makes sense. the brain plays tricks and it's hard to think logically sometimes. will try to enjoy my baby more. 🤗

Being Mum to a new baby is a really vulnerable time for anyone and it appears when reading your post that maybe some past anxieties have reared their heads. Rest assured that if your liver was worsening this would have been picked up in the many blood tests you have during pregnancy and childbirth. But talk to a health visitor if you can and explain your concerns. She might be able to get a blood test arranged just to settle your concerns.

Wishing you all the best and take care

Hi, congratulations on the birth of your baby. Being a new Mum can cause all sorts of changes in our bodies, hormones and brains. When we are sleep deprived our minds can make all sorts of connections that aren’t correc but seem totally logical at the time. Talk to your midwife or health visitor about the rash and I’m sure they’ll steer you in the right direction. Pregnancy can make your liver work harder than normal but things then settle down after the birth.

If you are concerned about your liver, quit drinking wine and any other alcohol until you get to the doctor for bloodwork

As I have written in my previous posts, I used to drink a lot. haven't done it in years. and it had been 1.5 years since I had a glass of wine with food. I'm not a teetotaler, but I'm not drinking right now.
