We’re not doctors on here…so please treat what I say with this in mind. GGT can be raised for all sorts of reasons. They’ve given it 2 weeks till they see you and will probably want to redo the test. During the next 2 weeks, lay off alcohol, eat healthily (avoid junk food) and generally look after yourself. I suspect that will be enough to reduce it. The opposite of these things make it elevated, so is probably the cause. It could be a sign of liver disease, of course, but this may be mild and fully reversible. So before reverting to Dr Google, wait to see what your doctor says and what course of action they want to take. I suspect it will be wider blood tests. Try not to worry, many people will have elevated GGT and have no idea they do. Yours is not massively elevated and remember that blood tests can change a lot just in the course of a few weeks - so wait to see.
Many thanks, I don't drink but have a poor diet and don't exercise, however I've started cardio in they gym and cut out all junk food, sugar and cigerattes
That’s great…carry on and I suspect the GGT levels will return to normal. It may take a bit of effort but will be great for your general health.
Hi Malik, I have just had a blood test and my GGT is 187 down from 240. Mine has been high for the last 10 years and they still can’t find out why. No Liver disease this was confirmed this week by an ultrasound. Having other blood tests to try and find out what is causing this but I really don’t think they will find anything. For me it will be just one of those things, cutting out alcohol doesn’t make much difference.
My GGT is always high. All other bloods are great. Then I discovered that I have been walking around with a gallstone 3cm x 2cm. It’s going to be removed soon. Been having stomach problems for years now. When i was in hospital i was asked just how much I drink by a nurse. I am 48. The last time I had a drink was 20 years ago. I’ve never been someone who has liked alcohol. High GGT can be down to gallbladder and gallstones.
